according to the interweb thingy zinc sulphate decomposes to zinc oxide and sulphur dioxide when heated (RR junior chemistry homework)


but to me

ZnS04 -> Zn0 + SO2 leaving a spare O

which doent make sense Can anybody help

I was going to double everything so you got O2, but it just made it worse.

A quick google suggests there are intermediates formed which might be the answer.

Could be wrong but sulphur trioxide is produces which then decomposes in another reaction...

2ZnSO4 ---> 2ZnO + 2SO2 + O2

That's the one; the original equation had the single 'O' exlcuded which I didn't spot.

It's second form chemistry (whatever key stage that is these days).
