Petrol and Diesel mix ?
Discussion
If my car were to start running very poorly after filling up, is there a way of telling if I had put the wrong fuel in instead of the car failling in some other way?
So for eg. if I were to extract a litre of fuel from the tank (and If I had mis fuelled it would be about 8:1 ratio in the tank)would I see some it floating in a clear container?
Any ideas please

I have turned the whole house upside down looking, even the bank statement only shows as fuel @ blah blah.
I thought the engine had developed a fault and the car has been sat in the garage since. But now I am starting to wonder if it is just the wrong fuel. It would of been Super unleaded at Shell but now wonder if it was super Diesel I hads put in ?

From my limited experience (coff) of putting unleaded in a diesel, the unleaded will float on top so the diesel will be used first. After that 'limp-home mode' kicks in and it runs like crap. A sure way to tell is the smell of petrol if you open the filler cap and sniff.
But don't take it to the same garage I did, because they couldn't work this out and charged me £1,000 for a new cat instead

The best way would be to find the specific gravity. Weigh your litre - if 0.83kg it's diesel, significantly less and it contains petrol.
If you can't get out a whole litre you could try (carefully!) setting light to a small sample. Pure diesel doesn't burn at all readily. Not sure about a 1:8 petrol/diesel mix. 8:1 would burn easily.

Rotor,
Sounds like you may have put diesel in a petrol car. It's the other way around that is death to the fuel system, your's will survive. I did it to my classic car, no risk to any catalyst so I don't know about that. Car ran poorly, companions said that seven colours of smoke came out of the exhaust, and several tank flushes with Shell V-max petrol didn't clear the plugs. I had to stop, extract and clean them before it ran smoothly again. But no long term problems.
If you can, drain the tank and refill with petrol asap, clean the plugs, take it for an 'Italian tune-up' and hope for the best! Worked for me.
