"NASA Internal Memo: Guidance for Education and Public Outreach Activities Under Sequestration

"Effective immediately, all education and public outreach activities should be suspended, pending further review. In terms of scope, this includes all public engagement and outreach events, programs, activities, and products developed and implemented by Headquarters, Mission Directorates, and Centers across the Agency, including all education and public outreach efforts conducted by programs and projects."

This post includes a link to http://www.spaceref.com/error2.html that is currently down, but other sites confirm:

It appears to be a result of the bhy political fighting in the US Government that ha sled to the 'cliff-edge' in thier economy, and a drastic cut in all federal funding.

They've tweeted a response to it, but I'm not really sure what 'mission critical' means in this context -
"Heard that NASA communications & outreach is shutting down? We're not going anywhere. Given the budget climate, we're reviewing outreach to ensure we're communicating smartly - priority on mission critical activities"

In related news, NASA have taken their NTRS server offline following the arrest of a former employee suspected of passing technical information to China. http://news.yahoo.com/nasa-steps-security-arrest-f...

NTRS now gives the following message:

"The NASA technical reports server will be unavailable for public access
while the agency conducts a review of the site's content to ensure that it
does not contain technical information that is subject to U.S. export control laws
and regulations and that the appropriate reviews were performed.
The site will return to service when the review is complete.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."
