Wood Floats ......?
Discussion
Who says that wood floats? There are MANY species of timber that do not float!
Also when boyant timbers get saturated, they can start to sink.
As others have said, if the boat is empty (i.e. no other crap on board) it should just still float when flooded, but if there is stuff on board, then it will sink.

i agree, mythbusters did a thing on the first pirates of the Caribbean film when they walk underwater under the upturned boat.
even when they drilled holes in the boat so all the air would leave, it still didnt sink, they had to put loads of weight attached to it to make it sink.
so extra weight, i.e. ballast, makes boats sink.

A little known greek bloke might have the answer you are looking for
Archimedes principle
Basically the boat shaped hole in the water keeps the boat afloat, the hull of the boat just keeps the water out of this hole. Let the water in & the boat sinks
Most people don't realise how heavy water is - a cubic meter of the stuff weighs around a tonne (1.0252 tonnes for seawater to be precise, 0.999 tonnes for fresh) so displacing it can support a lot of weight.

For metal yes, but the OPs question assumed it was 100% wood that was lighter than water. In that case, it will float even if holed. Gassing Station | Science! | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
