Interesting project, but seems to have too short a timescale. Would be great if they did it, but it seems a bit quick. Be interesting how the commercial side of space flight advances now.

I'll bet £5,000 it doesn't happen on that timescale, if at all.
The interesting thing is that no longer is it a Govt funded project, or even a 'commercial' project like Branson, but a 'media event' like an interplanetary Big Brother, paid for by advertising, hosted not by James Burke but Davina McCall and starring not astronauts but retards looking for fame...
Is that the price we have to pay to get to Mars?

Doesn't bear thinking about. Although eviction from "The House" would have slightly more serious consequences than a chat on the sofa with the programme host. The interesting thing is that no longer is it a Govt funded project, or even a 'commercial' project like Branson, but a 'media event' like an interplanetary Big Brother, paid for by advertising, hosted not by James Burke but Davina McCall and starring not astronauts but retards looking for fame...

It smells a bit whiffy to me, in all honesty. Could be a scam.
I expect that non government will start to get further, as with Dragon, but methinks these expect too much. Over optimistic?
From the web site
"Mars One will build a replica of the Mars settlement on an Earth desert to help the astronauts prepare and train, and for a realistic environment in which to test the equipment."
The settlement in the desert to train seems a tad unreal given the temperature and pressure on the real thing. This is where I thought the Moon might be a better candidate. But then they did train on and around Erf for the Moon, but the Moon is close by.
But, hey ho, good luck if they go for it.

This from 2005 and the Mars Society Desert Research Station in Utah:"Mars One will build a replica of the Mars settlement on an Earth desert to help the astronauts prepare and train, and for a realistic environment in which to test the equipment."

True!
But a little more investigation reveals..

Taken from their FAQ. Looks like it was written by someone who's been drinking too much coffee
Scary.
It will never get off the ground

Scary.
- What would 'people' do?
- What happens if you need a hospital?
- 'Live there forever' (!) reads as Drop and Forget.
- How do they select their candidates - are they ex inmates or nuns.. is there a criteria?
It will never get off the ground

I think the "crackers" part has already been verified.
Indeed... I saw Event Horizon too. Real astronauts don't make good reality TV...

Day 152 in the Big Brother capsule -
Daaaave is in the hydroponics bay checking the PH levels of the recycled water in reservoir 'D'. He has to check it with a bit of paper, and compare it with chart 'c' from manual AC-13A.
Pedroooo is in the habitat section cataloging the rations, and material supplies that arrived in the most recent restocking capsule that arrived 36 hours ago. He has to use the barcode machine to register every item, and ensure it gets tagged into the inventory database, and double checked with mission control on Earth to ensure nothing is missing, or extra.
Betty is sleeping... In hotpants.
