Seriously, I'd make a clone from the dead mother's cells and see if the offspring do it as well - ie determine if it was a mutation in the 'egg-making' gene or a one-off freak event.

Egg-laying creatures were around long before evolution brought birds along, so it was most definitely the egg first.

Interesting occurance though.

This sort of thing was seen not too long ago in lizards, where they were live birthing, rather than egg birthing.
