Nicely placed in the sky if you look out the window right now (and you have a clear sky, of course smile)

You're only making it worse!

The Moon & Venus did look cool though, before the 'SQUELCH' spoiled it...

Driving back from work earlier (east on the A5) I noticed them: an almost perfect crescent moon with a very bright Venus below left. Very striking.

There was a lovely view of them over the sea here on the south coast on my way home from work. Then there was the most surprising and heavy hailstorm.

There was a star / planet earlier about 6 pm that was just west of the Moon that seemed to have two light streaks coming out east and west of the star eg. -----o-----.

May have been an aircraft (I was driving and couldn't follow it.)

Yep, noticed that - great view walking to the Tower Hotel so it was above the nicest Thames bridge.

Did appreciate Google Skymap on my phone though, as I wasn't sure if it was Venus or Jupiter.

Not sure if 'normal' people can tell the difference from colour? I wouldn't know as I'm colour blind. Which incidentally seems to be one of the few afflictions it's still acceptable to have the piss ripped out of you for when you make the inevitable mistakes.

(By which I mean that I've had senior corporate managers I haven't met before pass comment in a disparaging way, not just normal banter. I don't cry myself to sleep over it, but I do find it odd - we're talking the sort of environment normally so politically correct they'd think twice before even hinting at the fact they had noticed a 'true' disability in someone, let alone actually taking the piss)

I digress. It did look bloody lovely, can understand why a similar image is on a few (I think, at least one anyway) Arabic flags. Although IIRC, wasn't that a supernova that inspired those.

Thanks google.

Jupiter and Venus are so bright you can't tell them apart from colour.
Mars is different though, it has a red tinge when seen with the naked eye.

Venus is brighter than Jupiter and has a whiter glow. Jupiter has a slightly yellow tint.

As a planet or star approaches the horizon, it will appear to flash and sparkle more as the light coming from the object is distorted by the denser atmosphere.
