Discussion
Potential to address the base load problem with renewables but its some way off.

Wonder how UK average temp for April will pan out. Got to be one of the colder Aprils on record.
Was average or above averagehttps://blog.metoffice.gov.uk/2024/05/01/a-wet-and...

Yes - cr*p weather but by no means cold in the SE. Beati Dogu said:
Met Office full of it as usual. Down here in the SW I still had the heating on throughout April and normally it goes off whatever.
Same in the North east, today was the first time it didn't fire up, set at 18°C, but if you look at the met office Web site its obvious what their agenda is.PRTVR said:

mean max temp - 13C
mean min temp - 4.1C
For this April
mean max temp - 13C
mean min temp - 5.5C.
The mean min temp of 5.5C was the sixth warmest for April in the record back to 1890

Because you were a bit chilly on a couple of occasions in April the Met Office is corrupt? I think the true believer is plain to see.
No, they have been corrupt since they they signed up to climate change and forgot that they are a weather forecasting business, they have regularly got the weather spectacularly wrong, barbecue summer anyone....My energy bills for April confirmed it was colder than average, for the met office to claim otherwise is strange because by their data we must have had lots of colder April's than the last, we had sleet and snow and temperatures in single figures and II don't remember been stuck in snow drifts in April.

Another one with anecdotal evidence. Bravo.
You appear to be using your thermostat and the current price of energy per KWh to determine the UK climate for April.
I'll leave you to it.
Not the unit price because this year I am paying less per unit and if you think its just me their is a thread that is on the winter 23/24 that has just closed. You appear to be using your thermostat and the current price of energy per KWh to determine the UK climate for April.

Year to year variability is clearly high - too much for personal perceptions from memory to keep up with.

Hmm, I mentioned the same on here many times, and was told that was incorrect.

Sometimes it's worth reading the links past the headline. It was certainly the cloudiest April we have had in a long time, and as the main way the seas around our shores warm up is from direct sunlight it will be playing catch up for a while. Anyone that spends any time in and around the open coast will know the water is well below average temps for the time of year.
Don't bother providing links to satellite sea surface temps, they don't measure the temp of the sea surface, just a sub micron layer that has so much going on so rapidly the temp can vary by many degrees in a relatively short period.
Now the Atlantic is moving into it's cool phase and that basically dictates our climate the next ten to fifteen years will be an interesting watch. If human induced warming is as big a deal as stated at the very least it should take the edge off the coolest period, i doubt many are geared up for winters similar to what we had in the 70's and 80's so it might turn out to be a good thing, for a while at least.
There will however be lots of headlines about increasing storminess as a cooling Atlantic is a contraction of the temperate zone away from the poles toward the equator meaning the clash between cool northern air masses with warmer southern air masses will occur more often closer to the areas where we all live, especially during winter. Look for more winds from the nor west round to sou east as we have had over the last two winters for a more sustained period.
The Arctic sea ice that has reduced is a negative feedback as the newly exposed water is able to radiate energy to space far more readily without its insulating layer, even more than the base figures would suggest due it tending to be windy up there. A windy surface can create cooling orders of magnitude greater than a relatively flat solid ice surface, especially if covered in snow so for all our efforts to boil the oceans the earth has plenty tricks up its sleeve to prevent that happening. I might be dead by the time it happens but at some point in the future this will all come out in the wash.
Please note outside of the highlighted part and the statement of how our seas warm through the seasons the rest is only my opinion.
