Gas anyone replaced these on a blob eye (2004) and where did you get parts from.
There are £90 from ICP EACH , probably well north of £100 from Subaru.
Considering what they are , that’s ridiculous but used ones are not feasible as they are made of old biscuit tins and rust away.
At the moment I’m living them crumbling away but don’t know how critical they are.
Any advice welcome.

I removed what was left on them on my Outback, which had done a hard 150,000 miles. It passed another 5 MOT's without question. I did give the brakes a clean up & check over about 4 times a year - I expect more dirt appeared than would have done otherwise but didn't have any seizing or other problems. I remember looking for some backplates & there were some aftermarket ones available then, but fitting is a bit of a pain - hub off etc. A mini grinder will remove the remains quickly!

I know they are not easy to do and was advised to just wait until the wheel bearings need doing, although at under 70 000 miles , I hope that won’t be soon.

quite a few people have removed them and had no issues , its simply not worth the trouble replacing them , if you really want them it would make more sense to make something up yourself or get a garage to do it , aluminium would probably last longer

If it’s the rears you’ll need to change as I believe some of the handbrake components join / clip onto the back plate and can cause issues if corroded. You’ll have to change the wheel bearings at the same time with the hub coming off. Got mine from ICP and once you get hold of them you’ll see why they’re £90! They’re a substantial piece.

I think we're getting mixed up here between the dust shields & the backplates - dust shields you can do without!
