Hi Guys/Gals,

I'm looking for a 4th Gen (2003-2009) Legacy Estate. Petrol and preferably a 3.0 and manual.

What should I look out for.

My mates got a WRX hatch, and warned me about rust, but he wasn't sure about the flat 6 engine.

Thanks

Ali

The engine will be as bullet proof as they come and I don’t know of any common rust issues. Just do the usual used car checks and you should be good. You’ll be looking for a Spec B, which is the only variant with the 3.0 litre and a manual gearbox.

I've just got myself a 2003 legacy wagon

Mine is an import from Japan which probably helps but has no rust.
My research suggested these don't suffer the same rust issues as the Impreza.

Uklegacy is a great forum, post your question there and I'm sure you'll get helpful replies

Btw the 2.0 twinscroll import is faster and better mpg than the 3.0 but maybe a little more expensive to buy, they tend to be in better condition than the equivalent age UK model so worth considering

I bought mine following a wanted ad on uklegacy, might be worth putting up a wanted ad and getting an enthusiast owned car

If you get the spec b I've had both the front lower spring cups corrode and fail on the bilstein shocks not cheap as it takes out a tyre and a shock so £550 in parts per side.

Also the exhausts are mild steel mid sections which corrodes. Replacements are expensive as there are not many flat 6 cars on the road.

Otherwise generally reliable fun cars

3.0 Spec B with manual gearboxes are not common so you may be waiting a while for the right one to come up.
