09 2.5 wrx tuning
Discussion
Getting my 09 hatch wrx mapped in a few weeks time. Company doing it is going to fit bigger fuel pump, new/bigger spark plugs and ecutek remap/rolling road and reckon it should be around 290. I already have a cosworth panel filter on it and have a full Hayward and Scott straight line exhaust and twin backbox system sitting ready to be fitted when it’s getting mapped as don’t want to drive it with de-cat before getting mapped.
I’m toying with the idea of fitting a bigger turbo at the same time so I won’t have to pay to get it mapped twice if I fancy more power in a few months.
Been looking at the vf43 turbo, is this a bolt on turbo or does it need work to fit? Also what other turbo options do I have? Would prefer something that bolts on to be honest.
I’d be aiming for 350hp max. I’ve been advised not to go over this for two reasons. The 5 speed gearbox seemingly falls apart after 350 and ofcourse the 2.5 engine gives bother standard power never mind at 350. Only thing I’m hoping that rules in my favour is that my engine is only after a rebuild 3500 miles ago, oil and filter has been changed 4 times in that period of running in. Also changed the gearbox oil about 500 miles ago for peace of mind.
So again, what’s my best options for a bigger turbo? Vf43? Td05? As I’ve said I’d rather something that will bolt straight on to the 2.5.
Thanks for replies folks

Hey!
Just saw this and I thought I would throw in my 2p's worth. The EJ25 isnt like the EJ20. It has a tendancy to go bang. So much so that before I had any work done I had a compression test done to make sure it was all good. Basically, talk to a good tuner. The gains on the 2.5 are not like they were on the 2.0. It's a lot more fragile.
YOu said the engine was rebuilt, but my question would be who rebuilt it ?

sports cat is a much better route than a decat , it’s only a few bhp from sports to decat , a decat is just going to be hassle mot time , a sports cat will give you better spool up lower down , but even a sports cat in the real world on the road driving its very minimal , the positive sports cat improves turbo noise

Yea I know they are a softer engine. The fella I bought the car off lives beside a rally mechanic. He builds rally cars and engines from the ground up, quite a few Subaru’s in his yard aswell as evo’s, mk2 escorts etc pretty well known around my area (Northern Ireland) so should have been rebuilt to a good standard, it’s not forged though.Just saw this and I thought I would throw in my 2p's worth. Might not bother with the turbo then and just do the remap, full exhaust etc.
Thanks for your reply

Just map what you have , fuel pump yes plugs probably , air filter minimal benefits if any , your limit is your gearbox , a remap will make quite a lot of difference , and if it’s a good rebuild engine should be fine
Fair enough mate. Already fitted a cosworth panel filter when I first got it so that will do my job. I’ve heard a lot about not pushing the gearbox over 350bhp but I changed the oil with high quality stuff anyway for peace of mind. Thanks for reply
