Oil Surge solution.... Advice please
Discussion
Hi guy's,
anyone care to advise on the plethora of oil starvation solutions please. Car is Impreza Ej207 classic. Fast road car, sticky road legal tyres suspension and brakes done. I want to do a few track days, local is Snetterton with Coram well known for a bit of g spot action.
Can't afford to do it properly with dry sump so not an option and would like the best value for money alternative.
Seen the Fuji windage tray and plates , any feedback? Not sure about accusump as an option?
Is the RCM group N baffle sump worth a shout.
Tia

I have my set up in the boot. Lift pump in tank then additional filter pump and swirl pot in boot.
Oil cooler I have mounted lowish down behind where one of the front fog lights would sit. But takes fabrication to get the air flowing right out of the back
Oil best you can use that is available in the UK for track use is silverline synionic. Not the better known brands. I have tried many of them.
(I run one of the quicker Impreza track cars in the UK - so this is not random advice)
All the best

Hi. It comes in different specs/grades. The race spec stuff, I run 10/50 l, is fairly pricey. But there is stuff for road cars as well. It is brilliant stuff, if you read the tech spec of it, it withstands higher temps. My oil temps in the track car dropped when using it. I blew a turbo fairly recently and the oil level dropped way too low - no problem, you will also notice it feels different to the touch than other oils, more slippery. So to answer your question yes I would use it in a road car but chat to Ray Culver at Silverline on Facebook about your car and he can advise on the best one for you (he happens to own 15 or so Subarus of different flavours so he also knows the cars inside out as well as slot about oil) cheers
To add acusump adds another layer of safety, it will keep oil supplied if you did get those few seconds of oil starvation and could well save an engine. However I have got on just fine without one. A very good baffled sump is the key.

The most important thing you need to have is a return to sump breather system if you intend to use sticky tyres. The RCMS full track version works well. The heads fill up with oil and dont drain back fast enough due to the engines design without giving the oil a faster path back. You need to mod the sump pan to accept the breathed out oil return. A simple catch can with no return system is not a good idea on an impreza engine.
It's worth sticking an extra litre of oil in the sump for heavy track use if you are using a proper breather system, if you retain the stock breather that feeds into the turbo inlet pipe i'd suggest you stick to the standard oil level but don't run sticky tyres.
I used to make the GroupN sumps and they are worthwhile, but i've found combined with the return to sump system a simple baffle plate with rubber flaps (originally made by cosworth and also now supplied by RCMS) and the stock sump works very well.
I've been tracking and competing in Imprezas for over 20 years, never lost an engine to oil surge. Make sure you properly cool the oil, my system runs at 90-95 degrees because i have a proper oil cooler core built into my radiator, most oil coolers don't work well because the airflow to them both in and out is poor. If your oil gets to 120 degrees C then its time to park it after doing a gentle cool down run.
Oil wise i use Millers CFS 10/60 NT+ or Fuchs Titan Race Pro S 10W-60 Ester Fully Synthetic Engine Oil
The standard shape sump are good enough until you start getting into high power applications, on the 750BHP TA car we had to put a fairly trick sump on the engine because the oil walks up the back under hard acceleration.
