Oil viscosity change
Discussion
I’ve got a 2005 WRX. I’ve had since new and I’ve had it serviced regularly and it’s done 63k. It’s next service is in September and is it advisable to up the grade of oil due to mileage. I only ask as my 911 is recommended to go from 0/40 to 5/40 after that sort of mileage. Yeah I know they’re different beasts
You need to be scientific about it. Measure the rate of oil consumption between changes. Start with a 5/40 and then 10/40 and see if the consumption decreases. Personally, I've always used 10/40 fully synth (Millers CFS or Fuchs Titan Race Pro S) in both my 2002 WRX and 2005 WRX but admittedly with higher mileages than yours. I'd go as high as 10/50 with an STi engine but 10/40 will be fine if you aren't ragging the WRX everywhere. 6k oil changes using good full synth oil and genuine Subaru filter (ensuring that the filter is fully pre-filled before fitting). Magnetic sump plug is a good idea also. If you get the filters from IPC, they always include a new sump plug washer.
I concur with Teknopug, I run 10/40 millers in my 95k wrx, works a treat, I also use HKS oil filters which have an inbuilt magnet, around £19 each from ebay. It doesn’t use any oil between changes and the millers nanaodrive is good enough for 10 to 12 monthly changes which for me is the best part of 6k miles.
