Lineatronic Outback
Discussion
Just wanted to add to this one as we currently have a 2.5 Lineartronic as well - would agree with the above, although our economy figures are slightly better. Seems to do 30mpg day-to-day at moderate pace, 35 on a long run.
It's a great car for getting around town, despite the economy, as the CVT gives it really sprightly performance 0-30. Its biggest issue is that this benefit drops away fairly quickly higher than that, and 165hp isn't much to move a 2T car about, so it's a bit disjointing to start running out of puff.

You just need a bigger engine. The lineartronic is best with the torquier engines (like many autos) but you shouldn't have any problems with a petrol Outback. A sticking passenger window is the only slight niggle I've had in over 3 years and some pretty extreme driving conditions - from dusty outback tracks in 40+ temperatures to uncleared alpine roads at less than -10.
I've no idea why they aren't more popular here when they are better than their rivals at just about everything other than fuel economy.
