Left the house this morning to find a stray piece of tile had come off the roof during last nights storm and smashed the rear screen of my wagon. Called the insurance glass people. No replacements available from their suppliers so only option to order one from Subaru. 7-14 days and replacement cost is over £800! So car tucked away in the garage (having spent two hours rearranging it / shoehorning everything in first so the car would fit), excess paid (£80) and I've borrowed a Toyota Aygo to run around in. Other option offered was source one myself and they will fit it but not cover cost of part.

I've never had to replace glass before but this seems expensive and will take much longer than expected. At least it will be an original Subaru part I guess. Glad I have a garage and access to another car. Would have been stuffed without.

Just thought I'd share that story with you all. Anyone know what vmax on a 1.0 Aygo is??

Suspect a bit late now but a whole tailgate with glass likely to be c£100 second hand?

£800 is nuts.

Agree £800 nuts but only costing me excess and avoids me having to spend time trying to find a full replacement boot and then fitting.

Some glass is cheap (relatively) by virtue of demand/numbers/production etc.

Other glass will be expensive due to low production numbers/less demand.

If I'm remembering correctly the saloons are expensive too. was told many years ago that they cost loads as they have the hole for the wiper in don't know id that means the glass is harder to make or a lot more labour to fit as opposed to just popping out a front screen

Quick update for anyone interested: got a call from auto glass this morning. Installation of the new glass was scheduled for tomorrow morning. They contacted the Subaru dealer to chase up the glass and guess what...it's still in the factory in Japan (apparently there was none and it needed to be manufactured). They estimate a further 14 days to get it here. I enquired about the possibility of purchasing an entire tailgate including glass from eBay. They say I can do this but won't cover the cost (£150 approx delivered) and can't guarantee they won't damage it when removing plus I'll have to pay an installation charge and then get rid of the redundant tailgate. Not worth the hassle imo.

They are coming tomorrow to remove the old glass and stick some plastic on it which should mean I can at least use it to get to work in the meantime.

I guess I could but absolutely no idea where to start with something like that. Plastic cover and sit it out best course of action I think.

it’s annoying waiting that long but at least it’s only the excess you are loosing , i waited about 3 weeks for a subaru radiator as the subaru ones seem to last a long time
