Hi PH'ers,Jap gurus, and scooby addicts!

I have been recently looking at purchasing a impreza, have looked at classics but they're not many around me and I don't want to travel too far to pick one up.

Insurance on a wrx sti is absolutely absurd! (£1000pcm) (yes! 1K per month?!?) Not sure why as I'm 24 6yr ncd and a wrx 2.0 is £700 a year.

Have been looking at this particular vehicle:

http://www.villagegreengarage.co.uk/used-cars/suba...

Would be coming from a mk6 golf gti: Edition 35, had previously had a e39 528i various e36 etc so had a few cars. Never driven a scooby.

What do I need to look for if I go to view this car or indeed any impreza?

I've also researched that the wrx is 221bhp, does this sound right? (Wouldn't feel that quick if I'm truthful)

Any help/information/links/abuse welcome.

The one you have linked to is about £2.5k over priced IMHO. It also has the later Blob seats with the earlier Bug dash/interior - worst of both worlds.

Thats interesting as they have also offered a smaller amount for my part ex, shame really.

I will continue a search for a 2.0 wrx.

Can you tell me cambelt intervals for the engine?
(I've read 65K / 5 years)

Thanks.

It's a different car to anything in your 'previous' list, certainly the interiors will feel a bit low rent compared to a later Golf.

That's not why we buy them though, try and drive one then you decide, they're not for everyone.

I'm on my second wagon, started with a late classic, now on an '04 WRX with Prodrive Pack (PPP), that lifts the output to c265bhp and a lump more torque. I use it as my daily work car and it is a hoot, can do everything I ever ask and I doubt there's much on the road for the money that can better them A-B in real world conditions.

I've the seats pictured in the one you linked and can confirm that for me anyway, they're rubbish. The right side bolster jams against my leg. The ones in the Classic were far better.

You're about right with cambelts, the kit is about £250 and same again for labour if you can't do it yourself.

My biggest problem with this will be when I come to change, what can do the job as well? Hanker after an STi330 but not sure it would look right with a towbar smile

Have to agree, that's way way overpriced for the mileage, that's actually 2.5 Hawkeye territory, or if you buy private you will get a half decent "SL" (leather heated seats, sunroof) or a much better blob with less miles.
I personally prefer the seats, they're probably better if you're a shortarse like me, not too sure about the cheapie dash, it's the same layout as mine is lol.

Cambelt intervals, there' so much info out there it is a potential minefield. I understand it's 40k / 5 years, If it's the second or third change and you intend keeping the car then I'd suggest doing the water pump, thermostat, modine hoses and draining out the coolant as well, and go for the full kit, not just the belt.

As an idea of cost I paid £179 for the Gates Kit, £89 for the Water pump (genuine Subaru cast impeller) £15 for the modine hoses, £20 for Fuchs Fricofin coolant, £13 for a genuine Subaru thermostat all from Import Car Parts (VAT included - delivery about £12) and £160 for fitting of all. Use decent oil and filters (I use HKS filters from Ebay and Millers oil from Opie)

Keep an eye out for tired drop links, knackered suspension, leaking header tanks, naff sensors and buy on condition and service history rather than anything else. I took a big punt on mine, it was sat unloved and unserviced for 18 months and I've spent some money on it getting it into decent shape, it's a PPP and I much prefer it to my previous Hawkeye. If you get a standard one, look into getting a decat, fuel pump and decent map, you'll never look back!.

That's exactly what I'm looking for right now but at the age they are it's becoming a minefield. Last one I was interested in was described as having 'absolutely no rust' but that's not what the last MOT said!

My Classic got a bit crusty around the rear arches and windscreen. No signs of the same with the later one, are there common other areas cropping up?

I love Impreza and have owned a few.

The biggest downside with most of the base models for me is they need more power. I think once they are over 330-350 they start to come alive but to be fair the running costs also significantly increase. The problem is once you’ve experienced it it’s hard to go back.

I think the 330s is the pick of the modern models for day to day duties.

I prefered the later seats for general driving, but the early ones do hold you better.

That is an early dash (Subaru reached the '90s by then wink )without the climate.

There's a seam at the back of the spare wheel well that starts to get a bit crusty. The front subframe/brace. Lower arms on the wagon (recall). Nothing horrible for a Japanese car of their age though! Just bits worth brushing up and giving a good coat of something.

Around the windscreens as said and the rear arches - which are the big issue. If rust is left long enough, it will eat through the strut towers and then it becomes a lot of work and obviously an MoT failure. They also rust from the inside out. The inner wheel arch panel had sealant applied where it joins the floor before paint was applied....this can act like a sponge and rot without you noticing unless you pull out the boot lining to inspect. The external wheel arches aren't a major issue if caught early. The Classics have repair panels readily available. However, nothing similar available in any quantity for the Newage for some reason AFAIK.

I've seen a few blobs rusting on the rear arches in the same way the classics did so I assume they use the same type of sealing method between the inner and outer arch?

I might have found a 330 so mine could be making an appearance in the classifieds!

Don't bother with the classifieds just PM me the details. If it's the right car in the right condition for the right price then I'll have it. I'm in Taunton and I see you're also in Somerset.
