Anyone looking for a Forester STI? :'( Also diesel advice
Discussion
I've been blind-sided by an unexpected, involuntary office relocation which is going to necessitate a car change in the very near future. :'( If anyone's interested in a Litchfield Forester STI let me know; ad will be going up later this week.
...In related news, anyone currently running the 2.0 diesel boxer engine? What's it like? I really want to stay Subaru and not end up in an Audi. I'm looking at various Legacys and Outbacks with the oil burner. What's the ownership experience like?

This thread ( http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...) suggests that it's mainly the early ones?
Which isn't to say I'm doubting your knowledge Vixpy. I know full well that you know your horizontally-opposed onions.

Some will do massive milage, seen some fail at 30k, bit of a lottery. Which isn't to say I'm doubting your knowledge Vixpy. I know full well that you know your horizontally-opposed onions.
Here's my 'two-penneth' having had a few. I had one of the very first Outback diesels to arrive in to the UK, it did 100k miles with no trouble whatsoever, it was worked hard towing at times and had oil changes very 5k. My following Outback followed an identical pattern, regular 800 mile round trips between North Yorkshire and the Western Highlands and not so much as a blocked washer jet. Both these cars had the 'earlier' type engine.
My Current Outback is a lineartronic, we also have a new diesel Forester, the only characteristics these later engines share with the predecessors is that they look similar, the delivery is smoother and more responsive, the engine much quieter and the economy improved, expect 42-44 mpg in real world mixed driving, 48-50 at steady motorway speeds, it really is leagues in front of the original power unit.
Giving you as much background as I can, I'm led to believe the diesel unit doesn't like constant very short journeys which shouldn't be an issue for you, the only case I'm aware of is an XV a Yorkshire dealer sold to a customer who does 3 miles a day which has been a 'challenge' with re-generation issues as the engine never warms through, other than that among many other owners I know across The Dales nobody has had a grumble about a later diesel .
Your best bet is to borrow one for 24 hours.
