subaru v mitsubishi now v ford

going back a while here but it used to always be subaru v mitsubishi and a new model every year even better from each maker , the latest creation from ford the rs looks interesting plus high spec from the start , 0 to 60 in i think 4.5 345 bhp out the box , oh and i forgot to mention a 2.3 litre and now 4 wheel drive , in my opinion a copy of the subaru set up , also to consider the golf r but it's more expensive and now the a45 merc much more expensive , i'm wondering what subaru will do next , what ever it is i hope a bit more engine strengthening work on the 2.5

The next engine wont be a 2.5 (thank god). it will be a 2 ltr again (twin scroll)This engine is already used in Japan, the 2ltr FA engine which will replace the EJ20.
What do Subaru need to do?
A hell of a lot to keep in the market, Mitsubishi had the right idea and stopped at the Evo X, what Subaru are producing is a pile of poo compared to what its up against and they really need to up their game, both mechanically and aesthetically, use better materials, more hybrid tech to drop those emissions, make it into a real drivers car and not feeling like it belongs in the 90's
It would be nice to see the 2 litre unit from the Jap market S207 in this or the next generation UK Impreza, it's up on power over the 2.5 producing 325hp and 320 ft/ lb. Performance figures for the S207 are sub 5 seconds 0-60 and circa 163 top speed.
My Son has a current Impreza, I've driven and been passenger in a friends Golf R, putting my Subaru passion aside I do find the 'R' a bit characterless, without a doubt they're quick but being an 'old bloke' and a bit old school I prefer the 'mechanical' feel of the Subaru.
The old Impreza v Evo dog fights were lots of fun, if the 2018 Impreza does get the 207 power unit we can look forward to it showing the RS a clean pair of heels ?

I think every test/comparison I've seen between the STI and Golf R has said similar - the STI is a much more involving and entertaining drivers car while the Golf does the boring stuff in a bit more comfort. Not sure how the Focus compares.Freds said:

It does indeed. The new generation engines seem to be shaping up quite well, my Pal and my Brother have Forester XT's with the FA engine and they're quite swift with the Lineartronic. We have a Forester and an XV with the FB engines and they've been faultless so far. Maybe the next generation STI will get the FA engine from the Spec B Levorg ?
it would be nice if subaru used the 2.5 but cured the issues which is what a reduild cures when it's done well , the 2 litre is the stonger lump the 2.5 is more torque and easier to drive with the same mods done to both , the mrs in the fsti beats me off the lights initially when i'm in the sti bugeye wagon , on boost maybe a different story , i think a drag race some where legal would be a great idea lol , plus a v8 v a scooby , i'm pretty sure the saying of no replacement for displacement works well , has any one done a 1 mile drag in a subaru what was the time and speed reached ?

The 2.5 is a poor excuse for an engine, its not as torquey as a twin scroll 2ltr, which from less than 1500 rpm will leave a 2.5ltr at the same rpm, plus its taken too much metal out of the block, it was a compromise engine to get around emission laws in the US and in Europe and it shows.Now a nice 2.2ltr would be nice, those were lovely blocks, fully closed deck and as strong as hell

2200 rpm upwards its on boost and it spools quickly as its a smaller turbo , all its had a remap and a cat back , that's what makes it much quicker off the mark as the boost is there very early along with more torque
You cannot compare a remapped car v standard, but just for the record the FSTI ive driven was a Litchfield 330, it was running perfectly, v a JDM STI, the twin scroll kills it.You really need to work the 2.5 to get the best out of it, they are laggy below 3k, even with a slightly smaller turbo they are no match for even a 1.6ltr twin scroll that Subaru do now

hi i'm sure cars drive different to the fsti , all i'm saying was it's on boost at 2200 , i've found the boost works well
from 2200 upwards , my ver 7 sti jdm needs to be driven harder to try and even catch the fsti off the line which it could not as the mrs left me for dead , but may at higher speed over take but at the time it's got a lot of distance to catch up with , i like the fsti as better mpg 35 on a good run fully loaded , 27 average , enough grunt v reliability and a good boot size , so far a full sized bath sink and toilet in the back , horses for courses fsti drives well , a spec d v fsti there was nothing in it possibly fsti quicker off the line , boring if we had the same cars , i've not driven a twin-scroll so i don't know , the cost of them and being rarer put me off , fsti are at good prices now , i also found out tune and mod a car too much and mpg is not good , i wanted mine as a daily drive with a bit of fun ,i'm still tempted by the rs though lol
