Anyone know what model Subaru impreza is a good investment, I am looking to buy one but unsure what one to go with.

Looking for a toy but don't want to lose money on it.

There are several. What kind of budget do you have ? A pristine P1 would be the one to own and hold it's value if you can find the right car. I have a pristine WR1, these are desirable and my personal favourite , good RB 320's are sought after, either of these will cost you 15-20k for a well cared for low mileage example.
You might find a GB 270 at slightly less money than the two above, these are desirable, only 300 saloons and 100 wagons were made, 10-14k should buy nice example. Alternatively the UK 300 (genuine ones) are a nice car.
If I were adding to my 'fleet' I would buy an RB320.

You've enough put aside to buy 2 ! There are a couple of outstanding WR1's on Autotrader at Adams Brothers Subaru, they're the most expensive two but have low miles, I happen to know that they've had both for some considerable time, might be worth a look and some serious negotiation on price.
There are also a couple of RB320's on Autotrader that stand out, in particular the 20k miles, 1 owner car at £18.750. It appears unmolested or modified which is the sort of thing that appeals to me.

Should point out I considered buying one of these.........until I drove one, the standard STI is much more flexible to drive, the turbo lag spoils the Cosworth imho. Still desirable though.

May be a silly question for such a specialist car but would a better map improve matters? I assume even cosworth had to compromise slightly for emissions, etc.

There is only 1 Subaru Impreza thats worth putting your money into and that is the 22B, but getting one for 40k.... not much hope unfortunately.

Forget p1', cosworths etc, they wont hold the value like a 22B.

What's your view on future investment of the RB320?

GOOD ONES....are currently very desirable and in my opinion are starting to become collectable, according to DVLA there are currently 225 taxed and 44 SORN, an indication people are recognising them as a worthwhile investment. Personally I wouldn't hesitate in buying the right low mileage car and may well do so in the next 6 months, I don't see the values dropping much in the foreseeable future. My WR1 is worth the same if not slightly more than I paid for it in 2009.

I think you will see classics rising in price and most of the ones suggested so far dropping over time.

The 22B is the daddy by far.

A special edition classic or 4 for that money would be my pick. The Cosworth is also something special.

Imprezas generally do well in regards to relative lack of depreciation so as long as you don't buy something well overpriced (such as Adams's WR1s) you can't go too far wrong.
