In all honesty, I'm not quite sure of the entire point of this post yet. Other than to vent my frustration!

I've had a few Impreza's now, and they really do seem to get under your skin.

Currently trying to save for a mortgage deposit (what a joke that is!) and do 20k miles a year. Does anyone else do similar mileage?

Despite just swapping an Alfa Giulietta for a BMW 120d Coupe, absolutely nothing compares to that blue starry badge. I should keep the BMW at least a year.. but what's the best MPG Scooby that is still petrol? Does anyone think a classic is up to this mileage?

Problem with the BMW is that it's German (read: Dull) and only seems to get 36-40mpg if I really try hard?!

The end goal is to get my beloved BRZ back. But time will tell.

We left London in September 14 as we wanted to buy somewhere, get married, start a family etc... Lots of initial moving expenses plus I needed to buy a couple of cars. The Mrs said that I should get a "4x4" - think that she was imagining a Range Rover - not an Impreza! hehe

As I say, I didn't have a lot of cash at the time and didn't want to get a loan as such, I managed to find a 2002 Impreza WRX Wagon at a sports car dealer in Southampton. They had taken it in part exchange and just wanted shot, as it was it didn't really fit in with their Porches & Ferraris on the forecourt. This also meant that I could pay by credit card. So £2k later and I was the somewhat wary owner of a 120k Subaru, with 7 previous owners and scant history. However, the car seems looked after, was original except for PPP and didn't appear messed about with.

I got a job soon after that in Redcar - that meant a 600+ weekly commute. 30k in 12 months. Car didn't miss a beat. It's now on 156k and admittedly uses a little oil but is to be expected. I'd be lying if I said that it didn't cost me anything, however, everything I have done has been preventative, rather than forced on me. So I've replaced all the suspension components, brakes (APs up front), summer/winter tyres, complete fluid and filter renewal (oil every 6k), fuel pump, battery, headlights (HIDs), plugs, cambelt etc. I'm probably in for £5k all told (including purchase). But that's pretty much all the consumables taken care of for a year or two. I don't think had I spent £5k on a car I would have got a better deal.

MPG - 28 average, that's with 80% M-Ways. Not brilliant, granted. But the option would be to suck up the fuel or spend 30k miles driving something very dull or running 2 cars....neither makes much sense. Plus knowing that you can make progress no matter what roads or weather are thrown at you, is very reassuring. You could probably eek out 30mpg with regular m-way driving at sensible speeds. If you are driving 20k a year, the difference between 35 & 30 mpg is about £9 a week in fuel...So if you paid £4k for an Impreza, rather than £5k for a more frugal car, that's a couple of years fuel difference negated.

So yes, an Impreza is easily capable of big miles, provided you buy well and keep on top of the maintenance. I've just gone past 156k and I'm considering a new exhaust and remap - that may signal the death knell! If you can do the work yourself, it will massively reduce running costs; if you have to pay someone else all the time it may work out expensive. Oh, and if you are planning on doing big miles in an Impreza, put some money aside for a very good stereo system....

To add; you can get diesel Subaru's (questionable reliability) and N/A Subarus.....but none of them are really going to give you that Scooby hit. You need a turbo engine for that (or a 3.0l Legacy at least). So they are never going to give great MPG. They are capable for high mileage though, so maybe you can save money on purchase price rather than fuel?

I've done 55k miles in my 05 WRX wagon in the last 3 years. I spent £1270 on an LPG conversion the week after I bought it. LPG is currently 52p per litre. I get 24.53mpg (I was rigorous with measuring the consumption for the first year) on gas. So that's the same running costs as a dull diesel that does 50mpg. My conversion paid for itself in 11 months. I've been smiling ever since.

I have a 50l donut tank in the spare wheel-well. I get ~200 miles from a tank. However as the vehicle is dual fuel I still have a fully functioning 60l petrol tank.

I've done 26k In the first 7 month of owning mine fuel prices are low take advantage :P

Hahaha good reply. I've done respectable mileage in the two I've owned, especially a few years ago, long motorway stuff. Don't know what the seats are like in the '02 wagon, the version 8/9 STi seats are hateful for low back pain sufferers. Apart from that and the MPG, it was fine. Mechanically they were both very sound, one was fairly lightly modified, the other a bit more so. Wish the fuel tank was a bit bigger!

They reckon over on SubaruForester.org that the WRX seats around that era were some of the most supportive that Subaru produced. I have '01 Impreza WRX seats in my Forester and they are great, but I have had back problems, so I got a pump up lumbar support and put it into the seat. Easy to do because the back section unzips to reveal the frame. They are perfect now!

Just hit 170,000 in my 2.5 Outback! No issues so far apart from serviceables, New windscreen and New exhaust. Touch wood.

Have you looked at getting it mapped ? They normally run on the richer side, my mpg increased to the mid 30's on long runs, form 25 ish and paid for its self after 12months, depending on the software used theres always the posibilty of getting twin maps so you could have a low boost/commute map then switch over to full beans mode when the mood takes you ?
