Hi all, i'm looking at buying a w/end toy. Originally I was going down the M3 V8 route but a mate of mine has just surprisingly offered me his absolutely 'MINT' Cool Grey 2 door V5 Type R. I have badgered him many times in the past to sell his 'R' to me without success so this has come as a big surprise to me. He's owned the car for 8 yrs and its covered approx 30k mls (only used 6 months a year on nice days) with a massive history file plus a lot of tasteful top quality modifications carried out in his ownership. I have just sold my BMW E92 335i so natural progression for me would be the M3 but after owning several warm rally reps over the years, Cosworths, Intergrale, 3 Evo's etc I always enjoyed the driving and fun Factor with these type of cars especially with some of the great driving roads we are lucky to have close by. I would be paying quite strong money for the car, more than I really want to but knowing the owner and how much of a pampered life it has had in his ownership i'm seriously considering going for it.
This would be my first venture into Subaru ownership.
Should I go for it? Two very different cars the R and the M3, that I understand. Any thoughts positive or negative appreciatedsmile...

Thanks.

Silly question, definitely go for it!

Decent Type R's are like hens teeth and if you look after it I can actually see it appreciating in value. It's a fantastic drivers car that offers a polar opposite drive to the M3.

Without stating the obvious get a decent drive in it and see what it makes you feel. It'll be quite manic, short gearing but it'll feel alive. A few choice mods will be unavoidable so factor some extra spending on top of what you pay for the car.

Sorry, probably a rubbish reply, but just do it.

I'd love another one day
Bought mine back in 2005 when I was just 23... 2 years later I'd thrown over £10k at it
Ej22t short block
Pistons, rods, 2.5 litre crank, Md321t turbo, v pattern 800cc injectors, adaptronics ecu, fmic...
Was doing 420bhp on a slipping clutch...

Not rubbish at all, all replies welcome.
The short gearing issue has been sorted with a longer 5th gear retro fitted in my friends ownership. The extra spending has already been done. I always like to put my own stamp on any car I buy but in all honestly this R has it all and some, much Roger Clark, AP 6 Pots, 6 spoke Revolution alloys niceness and other top quality gear already in place, Bob Rawle live map circa 375 BHP, 321 ft Ibs torque etc. The car is a piececool. I hopefully have a lowish (47k) mileage White EVO 9 GT that looks very clean to view on the w/end too that is 2 hrs away, not too far to travel and pulling my strings too. Having owned 3 Evo's previously I thought that was what i'd go for if I didn't go for the M3 but this Type R is really tempting me even if it is quite expensive but only 20 mins awayrolleyes. Gonna have to chip my mate down a little I think lol. Not holding out much hope thoughlaugh...
Decisions decisions!!!

Bloody hell, 420 bhp on a slipping clutchnuts. Nice car too...

Just spotted the grey R5 GT Turbo in the drive, looks good. Yours? I always wanted one of those but went down the Ford Escort MK1 RS Turbo route instead...

30k in 8 years? What a waste! I've just done that many miles in my Scooby in 8 months! driving

If it's that "MINT", will it not detract from the enjoyment of owning it? Scared to leave it parked anywhere, not taking it out in the wet, constantly washing it, paranoid at any odd sounds, becoming more of a burden than a pleasure? Depends how much it is I guess..

30k since new so 16 years in realityeek. I appreciate and understand what your saying and yes there are downsides to owning cars like this, my wife has played hell with me buying 'Garage Queens' in the past. Plus side with this example is I know the car, I know the money and care my friend has lavished on it in his 8 yrs of ownership. That's my excuse anywaybiggrin

I had mine as a two year old car back in 2000, when 330bhp was still a respectable power figure.

Probably the best impreza I have owned.

Nice R mate, nearly bought a silver one similar to yours back in the early 00's from the then Jap import specialist 'Warrenders' up toward Manchester if my memory serves me right. Came home with a 30k mls Evo IV instead, was a close thing. Thinking back to then, the Type R felt more of a raw car to drive and both were totally standard...

Was that the grey Evo IV they had in the front of the showroom, was up for around 18-20k?

It was an awesome car at the time (2001-2005). Imported new by previous owner and specced for delivery with electric sunroof and heated recaros.
It those first two years he fitted Ledas, decat, Ap4pots, link ECU and a host of other tuning parts, like the carbon panels and Defis in the pictures. He later replaced it with a 22B.

I actually went looking for an Evo5, but couldn't find a straight one For my money at the time, and this was bang on budget.

No it was a White 1 previous Japanese owner car, paid £15k for it, thinking back it was about 2003...

I owned a V5 in the early 2000's, great car imho. Go for it as the 2 door looks far better. Base car for the P1 if I recall correctly.

Hol, do you have info for the original owner?
Electric sunroof & Recaro options info on the car will help massively also.
Thanks

I would say get a good test drive in it to see if its for you. If you like evo's it may well be. They sound good and with the dccd and mods you've mentioned it will be a very fun car.

You say it is expensive. is that compared to other cars of the same age or compared to a v8 m3/ evo 9?

I reckon if its mint and you look after it you won't lose any money on it as they are getting rarer and more expensive as time goes by. This is one plus point over the other 2.

Good luck, and if you buy it get pics up.

Johnny.

How much information are you looking for?

Actually, I think it was the second owner I bought it from.

It was bought originally through a Subaru dealer in Horsham (who the story goes, then lost their franchise for importing Type R's) and I remember seeing the original invoice with EACH seat costing £900 and the roof £1200.

It was also mentioned in a 'star letter' in the June98 edition of Evo mag, although its not the car shown in the cover feature. I gave a copy of the mag to the new owner.

The first owner was called Gino (GNO number plate), which makes sense.

Thanks Johnnysmile. Expensive compared to the few other Type R's I have seen for sale and it being older than the other cars i've been mulling over (M3 etc). I'm hoping to have a good test drive within the next week or two weather permitting. Knowing the owner and knowing how bloody fussy he is (I sold him a Sapph Cosworth in the late 90'slaugh) the car is not the issue, as you have stated I just want to make really sure the car is for me. I visited him last w/end for a chat/viewing and a due reminder of how good his car is.
I hope your right that the car won't lose any money, done it on more than one occasion with several previous cars of mine, selling them for a price and then watching the value of them escalate considerably in the future.
If all goes well I will put some pics of it up when the weather's better.

Thanksthumbup

I bought one before Xmas, Subaru number 5 and my favourite to date. It's not as friendly as any UK car and I'd be hesitant to use it lots day to day (firm suspension, low geared and noisy) but as a toy it's ace.

Another vote for yes! The Type R is a really special car, more so IMO than the M3 or the Evo. It will hold its value too...
