I have a series 1 Forester S Turbo which is not going to get through it's next MoT as the sills are rotting, as are several other bits, and the rear subframe is looking pretty sad too. I've got an offer of a series 2 Forester XT with a wrecked engine but otherwise in decent nick. Will my engine fit the newer car without giving me an aneurysm?

I'm not sure on this one, assuming the new SG is a 2.0l version? Would it not be easier to pick up another 2.0l turbo engine which would match the existing gearbox, ECU and other items. Then sell all your existing parts to pay for engine and any other parts needed? Try posting here as I'm sure one of the guys will know the answer/s...

They are both 2.0 litre engines, which is what prompted me to consider if it was possible.

The SF5 S Turbo has very mild cams (compared to the impreza at least) and I am not sure if the pre 2005 SG9 definitely has the same cams and Ecu map.

You should go on to the Europe Forum of Subaruforester.org, and ask there for a definite answer, as suggested above.

But, simply looking at the performance information from the link below, my guess is that it would fit as both 2.0 cars shared the same power and TD035 turbocharger.
(If your XT is the 2005 on 2.5model, then that is completely different)

I thought XT badging came with the 2.5-litre engine. In which case it might be better to sell the bits from yours to fund a new engine in the later model - must be stacks of 2.5s out there from Imprezas. Also, the 2005-on Forester came with, I think, 220bhp as standard. Fun.

In the UK SG FXT's came in 2.0ltr[176bhp] and 2.5[SG5/207bhp or SG9/223bhp]. Although the 2.5 lite Impreza, Legacy, Outback and Foresters share a mass of platform parts each has their all important differences...so the OP needs to be careful. Even simple gearbox changes can be near nightmare'ish. You and Hol are right in the easiest way would be to maximize profit with the sale of the SF parts, there's a big following for SF Foresters...and then buy cash/negotiate hard and acquire a really good value complete driveline for the SG and the transplant.

Alternatively, cut out the crap and hassle...sell/break the SF and buy a-n-other SG that's in tip-top low mileage condition; as I did, from Hol! Good evening, Mr H wink

Hi Andrew,

I'm glad to see you are still enjoying the SG.
That was an awesome family car for us.

You'll absolutely love it more when we get some deep snow. In fact I have some totally unused/never needed once snow chains somewhere that are testament to its winter credentials.
