Outback / Legacy 62 Plate Diesel

This is a long shot but my brother has a low mileage 62 plate Diesel Outback with one of these really annoying periodic problems.
On two recent long journeys (200 miles +) the engine has cut out (died and refused to restart) with the unexpired fuel range read out showing 300 miles +.
The recovery men made the usual accusations of running out of fuel but on both occasions the tank proved to be at least half full.
The local dealer has made two attempts to find the fault anf found nothing. Anyone else had a similar experience or any ideas?
