Hi All, as of Saturday i am now a Subaru owner!

I have bought a 2003 Blob-Eye Impreza WRX wagon and I’m very happy with it. Just 1 thing is letting it down the sound system. I think whoever had before liked loud music and the speakers are knackered. I want to change them out for some aftermarket ones but I wasn't sure how difficult this is or what I need to do it. I don't want to fit a sub or anything like that just replace the door speakers with something a bit better. I want to keep a standard look, Do I need adaptor plates or any extra bits or if I get the correct size can I just swap them over?

All and any help is welcome
thanks

I had one a few years back and it's dead easy to replace the door speakers. They are a funny rotor shaped housing rather than circular, but you can just buy any standard 16 inch speaker to fit with an adapter.

I made up the adapters myself out of MDF which was pretty easy, but having a quick look they now seem to be readily available. A two second search on ebay found these

For 9 quid I probably wouldn't bother making them myself now!

I'm looking to update my speakers in the future. From what I've seen on the forums a lot of people use a commonly available speaker adapter designed for Vauxhall Corsa's.

oh ok, well I hadn't chosen some speakers so i just ordered the adaptors and speakers as a kit. Seemed to be ok quality and well priced.

It's the head unit, not the speakers that are the main problem. Make sure you replace that, and then consider the speakers.

The plastic mounts are easy enough to get and give you the extra room required to clear the window as it drops (the bigger magnets will hit the window if you dont get the additional clearance). Make sure you remove the plastic on the inside of the door card, which will stop the door card going back on (you will see what I mean when you essentially raise the speakers forwards).

I have rainbow speakers in mine, which are amplified with a Genesis amp, and they sound awesome wink

Agree about the head unit. It isn't powerful enough to control the speakers properly, so you get distortion at relatively low volumes. I changed the unit in mine and had a massive difference in the sound without touching the speakers.

Do you run the amp from the boot?

4 gauge cable from the battery, with one Genesis amp for the door speakers which are Rainbows, and a West Coast amp for a 12 inch Diamond sub (sealed unit). It sounds awesome, and I did it all myself smile

Just to follow up on this 1, new head unit is not fitted and has made a massive difference. I probably would be happy to leave it as it is but the speakers arrived today so I'll fit them over the weekend and all will be sounding great! thanks for the advice all.

How did the speaker change go?
One of mine has stopped working so I'm interested to know how easy it is and the best way to get the door card off etc.

It was really easy took me about 40 mins to do both front doors, its 3 screws and some plastic clips, you just have to be brave when pulling the door cards off. the only other problem i had was the holes in the adaptors were wrong so used the original speaker as a template and drilled some new holes worked a treat.

have a look here its a good step by step guide on how to do it.

How are the coax speakers? I'm thinking about doing a similar thing with mine, but using these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hertz-Subaru-Impreza-Fro...

Mine has component speakers at the moment, but they are pretty bad, I'm just wondering if the coax ones offer enough of an improvement, rather than having to find space for crossovers etc....

Thanks
