Hi all.
I've bought a year 2000 'V' reg Impreza Turbo Wagon with a couple of problems that the guy selling made me aware of.
Great car, drove one years ago and loved it, and this one is to replace another car once it is fettled.

Anyway, once warm, car idles erratic, though previous owner has fitted a new MAF sensor, leads, coil pack. Recent plugs.
I've took intercooler out, cleaned throttle body, idle control valve and something else beneath intercooler that looks like it was clogged up.

Today I cleaned MAF with MAF cleaner. Still have old original MAF, though can't fit as it has odd shaped tamper-proof bolts.
Anyway, took car for a spin, idles better but not brilliant, but if anything general running is rubbish and worse than before.

Car does not like full throttle, lumpy at part throttle, but once at 5000 rpm is clean.
I personally would like to try 'old' MAF and see.
My opinion is spark plugs need changing, but thought I'd ask here.
I think they might be 'fouled' from poor idle, when you have black smoke.
Car has done 90k and that is it, apart from binding front brake that was steamy earlier...
Any help appreciated.

After more farting about this evening I think I've cracked it.

Unplugged front 02 sensor that is just after the turbo and visible in engine bay.

Car runs exactly the same. CEL comes on now and then just like before. No different at all. Idles erratic still.
So sounds like the sensor is kaput to me, and car is running like a bag of nails because of that.

Will look at getting that fixed by a mechanic as can't undo it.
Hope this helps someone else.

The 99/00 maf sensors afe very fragile, cleaning damages them.

I would by a genuine one from a subaru dealer to ensure it is good. No pattern part ones work.

Also check inlet pipe for splits or breathers off the inlet pipe for leaks. The inlet pipe offen splits underneath where it meets the turbo.

Hi I had a similar problem with my "00 wagon it turned out to be a faulty knock sensor, got a second hand one and cured the problem.

Hi thanks for comments.
I've been doing more research and need to be sure if possible, as can't drive car far before front calliper gets very hot. So a bit stuck at the moment it seems.

Had wheel off but can't undo the bolt to move calliper so I'm stuck.
Looking at second hand stuff as well so thanks for all input.

If it was knock sensor that is playing up would that alter if I have the 02 plugged or unplugged, as there is no difference at the moment.
Any help welcome. Thanks again.

I've today had a look into reading codes and found that I have a code 22 coming up, knock sensor.

So I was barking up the wrong tree.

Also, now have a fuel leak, joy of joys.
Nevermind. Soon be Christmas.

Where is the fuel leaking?

Filler pipe is a common place.
