Hello chaps. After getting annoyed with running two cars I have decided to consolidate. Obviously the sensible thing to do is to try a turbo 4WD nutter as I haven't had one yet. Evos don't do it for me so that kind of narrows the field.

I have had a look on Scoobynet and am aware of the 2.5 potential for problems. I would be looking to spend around 9k which would get me a good 2005 with DCCD, which I understand to be one of the best UK versions.

Complicating matters is the fact that a dealership fairly nearby has a couple of JDM cars, specifically this one

What would be the implications of going for a JDM car? Does anyone have an idea how much extra the insurance would be for example (I am 35 so it isn't a massive issue but is still a factor in costs). Are there any issues with rust etc? Also I know that they don't get the traditional Scooby noise but does anyone have any links as to what they actually do sound like as I have come up dry on Youtube?

Or the UK option

Edited to add the UK option

The 2l JDM blobeye engine is very strong (I believe it is one of the last subarus sporting forged pistons and jollygreenmonster on here ran one to 500+ it seems http://bbs.scoobynet.com/projects-40/883491-jgm-da...

Personally, don't like the OMP steering wheel or the 'afterburner' induction as the standard items are better but that is a minor criticism.

Also... the 2.5 engine issues are mainly for the hatch and having had a 2.5 in my fsti I believe it is a nicer engine for the road (more torquey and a fair bit more fuel efficient) but... the 2l does rev nicely and in this guise is bomb proof.

The blobeye 6 speed is also short ratio so doesn't cruise as nicely as the later hawkeye 6 speed (one of the reasons the 2.5 is more fuel efficient).

Drive the 2l and the 2.5l and see which you prefer as it depends how you drive.

Thanks. I dislike the steering wheel as well TBH.

I prefer the look of the Hawkeye but am worried about the engine issues, although I understand that the internet always exaggerates this sort of thing I have avoided trouble with my RX8 and don't know if I would be lucky twice!

You might get a forged Hawkeye for £9k

My 2.5 is currently getting rebuilt because of head gasket failure.

I doubt you'll get a decent forged hawkeye for 9K, at least not without galactic miles.

I've never had a increase in premiums because of it being an import. Having had quite a few jdm cars I now go out my way to get jdm examples. They have always been better than the uk examples I've looked at.

But they lack the burble frown

Thanks. I guess it is just a case of trying both JDM and UK cars and seeing if I can live without the burble.

They have equal length headers, whereas UK cars have unequal length headers. It's the unequal length that causes the distinctive burble sound.

Jdm ones still burble. I haven't compared side by side though, so maybe uk spec is more distinctive? I know my gtb burbles just as much as a uk2000.

It's a gtb though so not really what you are looking for.

Newage JDM Imprezas do not burble. Very impressive performers but the flat four burble is what gives scoobs so much of their character and tbh I couldn't be without it!

I stand corrected smile. Why use different manifolds? Does the turbo route differently on JDM cars?

I think its to do with twin-scroll turbos, or at least that's part of it...

The search is still ongoing (complicated by the fact that 350z's are calling to me as well!

The above car looks pretty decent value for having a load of forged bits. Apart from not wanting [another] silver car and the stupid name of the garage selling it, does anything jump out as being dodgy before I go a long way to have a look?

Yep, twin scroll turbos use equal length manifolds.
