My old classic is coming towards the end of its life - I have an MY00 Impreza Turbo and have owned it since new.
It has been exceptionally reliable and needed minimal work - still on original clutch despite 130k miles and remap.
I use it for general runs and to keep the mileage down on my other car a 997.
What would you recommend as a replacement?
It has to be manual and a saloon - don't get the hatches at all.
I am an old git so insurance isn't a problem.
From what I can see the N/A 2.0 models are in the same tax bracket and similar mpg.
Will only be doing 6k per year.
I am open to suggestions re various Impreza models or even Legacy.

I guess the question is what do you want from it?

The Legacies are bigger/comfier/more luxurious if that matters and still great to drive, but the Imprezas are generally a bit lighter and more agile.

When you say it's coming "to the end of its life", what does that mean? Or to ask the question another way, why exactly are you looking to replace it and what are looking for in its replacement?

TBH it strikes me as a little strange to replace a turbo GC8 with a new NA model - the cars have very little in common other than being made by the same company.

When I say coming to the end of its life its to do with cost and maintenance.
Cosmetically its getting very poor with multiple dints from car parks and peeling lacquer.
Mechanically every year there is more to fix for the MOT and I understand rust is becoming an issue underneath.
Its probably only worth 1k if that given the condition and miles so I think the next big bill will be a decision.
Ultimately I want a reliable reasonably fast 4WD saloon most probably another Impreza.
I am unsure if there is realiability issues with the 2.5?
It will be driven hard mostly on B roads and will most likely not be modified at all.
I would hope to have a top budget of about 6-7k.

For that budget a blob WRX is probably your best best. There is evidence that the 2.5 is prone to failures, and an STi is probably too firm/hardcore for your requirements.
