I haven't had mine go yet (55 plate on 85k miles) but looked into it before I bought my Spec B a year ago.
My broad understanding is that welding might be fine until the thing disintegrates (mild steel, apparently), and that the best replacement is a custom stainless steel job which <should> cost around £400, iirc.
