Should I bother
Discussion
Hi new subject for me, sadly xjr 6 is up for sale due to the fact that I dont have the funds to run it anymore. My theory is (man maths etc)that perhaps an imprezza being 4 cylinders and a lot lighter would be less expensive to run but give me the four wheeled fun fix that I need ,is this a reasonable thought process or utterly rediculous what do you scoobyists think?
They are well known for being economical. Absolutely.
If you get an STI you would be looking at 20mpg average and a WRX will possibly get about 5mpg more.

WRX - the hot, turbo version of the Impreza, compared to the non-turbo variants.
STi - Denotes a car with the Subaru Technica International kit on it. 6 speed gearboxes rather than the 5 on the WRX, lots of uprated kit under the bonnet, more power than the WRX versions, different suspension, ARBs etc.
PPP - Prodrive Performance Pack. A Subaru-approved upgrade package that could be applied to standard WRX and WRX STi cars to give them a bit more power. Includes an exhaust, an intercooler pipe, a secondary cat removal, an ECU upgrade etc.

Its not the fuel consumption more servicing and parts tyres etc ,car would not be used as main vehicle anyway only fun .Also looking at various threads they seem a little fragile any thoughts?
I've had two, and other than a split coolant pipe, they were utterly reliable...Had imprezas for 10 years + now. Very reliable given the power and the fact I have driven them reasonably hard from time to time (always serviced and warmed up/cooled down etc though). As others have said my sti does approz 20mpg maybe more when the kids are in the car or a longer journey. I don't think they are a car you can run on a shoe string budget as tyres, brakes and even servicing are not cheap but they are not super car prices either
Good luck with whatever you decide on

Brakes and tyres etc are cheap as chips given the performance on offer. 4 RE070's for my STi cost £450, which wouldn't even cover two rears on cars with similar punch.
30 MPG can be archived on a run, if you drive steady and cruise at 70. I did this routinely in both my Imprezas. However, I also tracked my STi and enjoyed 6MPG...

Have a look at my car pool feature from last week. I have a 2004 STI and Forester XT so it should give you an idea on ownership. 20mpg average is untrue in my experience.
Amazing, the first person to reply. My STI managed a combined average of nearly 21mpg over 36'000 miles. The lowest ever recorded was 6.5mpg (nearly a full tank in 74miles) and the best was 440miles from a tank (40+mpg) done on a journey to Yorkshire and back mostly spent at 60mph in various lorries' slipstreams.
It must be added that the newer Imprezas tend to be better on fuel but harder on tyres, the classics tend to be cheap as chips to pick up, they are good on consumables but they are incredibly thirsty and obviously they are getting on a bit now.
Personally if i had another it would be any of the Wagons (estates), a Widearch Hawk or a Classic STI.
The newer ones are incredible to drive but the older ones feel more fun, no ABS, no TC, lighter and slightly less mechanical grip but much more involving.
You will also discover that Scooby owners can argue about their cars more than almost any other single make demographic.
Do not be afraid of modified cars but know what modifications you are willing to accept. Brakes upgrades are good, boost controllers/exhausts/remaps are very common but you want the printouts and they need to have been rolling mapped not just flashed. If it knocks at high RPM on the test drive avoid it.
Get one, you will massively enjoy it.
I got rid of my XJR6 last year and now have a twin turbo legacy. Mine works out very cheap to run as it is on LPG, but on petrol it really only does low 20's to the gallon (about the same as my Jag).
I do miss the Jag, and to be honest if i had the choice between that and my Subaru and both were doing 40mpg cost equivalent (as my Subaru is) I would definitely have my Jag back
