420lb/ft, which 'box?
Discussion
Over the winter I think I'll probably change the box in my p1. It has an '09 Sti EJ25 block with a TD05 20G and is making around 380bhp and 420lb/ft.
Would you go for PPG internals for the 5-spd or fit a later 6-spd?
The 6-speed box needs a new prop and driveshafts which makes the two options fairly similar in cost terms. The 6speed gives the option of DCCD and ABS which seems a worthy upgrade.
Any opinions, thoughts welcome. Ta

go drive a car with a six speed first...very different feel from the five speed.Would you go for PPG internals for the 5-spd or fit a later 6-spd?

Thanks, I've driven a few newage cars with the 6-speed box but never a GC8...
big improvments can be made by uprating the shifter bushing but i just don't like how close everything is compared to the five speed...problem is PPG keep lowering the power levels...http://www.ppgearbox.com.au/page.asp?productid=82

Right, ppg you will prob break at 450 ftlb , prob is the six speed boxes are horrid, the nicest is the hawk box but even these
Are horrid to use compared to a 5 speed, they are bloody strong though
Any experience with the Albins or SC gearsets Charlie...I know Mikee has been running one in their drag car (and he is a brute!), but no idea how often it's refreshed...Are horrid to use compared to a 5 speed, they are bloody strong though
Thanks Vixpy. I always thought PPG were good for monster torque!
Ever come across Par-Engineering gearsets?
The car is so torquey and driveable, I don't think it really warrants a 6-speed - and, as you say, the 5-speed has a lovely feel.
I will try to get a run in a reasonably powerful 6-speed to get a feel for it.
Cheers

Par similar rating to ppg.
I would just go with a 6spd. As said hawk is best ratios and the prodrive linkage isnt expensive and really makes a nicer change in use. Or AS performance do uprated bushes for the linkage that work well.
Assuming its a road car you might get away with a ppg or similar but the 6spd is just a fit and forget on a road car.
You dont need shafts or hibs if you get the correct ratio rear diff or box btw
