How bad is the new 2.5ltr engine ? Has anyone on here got a post 06 car and had engine trouble?

Mine failed with less than 30,000 miles on the clock. But then that was because a Subaru main dealer didn't fit a cambelt tensioner properly so not a reliability issue.
I think the Hawkeye 2.5 WRXs are fine, even when mildly tuned. From what I've read, its the Hatch STi that has piston ring weakness. I think a forum member (ali_t?) posted his experiences....

I've got an 07 hawk. As above, the problem seems confined to STi's of the hatchback variety. Not heard anything about WRX's having problems, by all accounts they're reliable with the ppp or mild remap to about 300 hp.From what I've read on the late 06 and 07 models they revised the head gaskets, as that was apparently a weak point. Don't quote me on this though, by my own admission this is what I've read on the net.
There's a long thread on scoobynet about it, having read through it after I got my WRX I'd thought I'd made a big mistake, however, it does most certainly seem to be STi models getting the problems. Then again, having read ages ago about some horror stories about the 2 litre models suffering with piston slap, I thought I'd just bite the bullet and get the model I wanted.
I'm pleased with the 2.5 WRX. Easy to live with, plenty of torque and a nice B road weapon, even if it does lack the firepower of an STi or EVO. As it's used and was purchased as a daily driver, I think I made the right decision. Fuel bills aren't as horrific as I first thought, I'm getting a regular 25/33 mpg on my work commute which is basically 20 miles of carriageway with sensible driving ,off boost. Around town it drops a fair bit though. I've read not to trust supermarket regular unleaded, so it's been either shell pump, v power or momentum in the tank.

53,000 miles running standard power
15,000 miles running 280bhp/360lbft
Oil change every 5,000 miles. Never missed a beat despite getting thrashed around by a 24 year old prat every day.
Just try not to push it past 340bhp and you should be relatively safe.

Out of the 2.0 and 2.5's the best WRX from an engine point of view is the 2.5 IMHO. Turns the humble WRX Sportwagon into something really worth having to live with every day. I love it in a WRX, however, for me it's the 2.0 STi that steals the show. Awesome engine and very characterful and tuneable.

As above, I had a 2009 STI 330S and it developed ringland failed on piston 3 after only 19,000 miles. Wouldn't touch another one with a very long bargepole until Subaru start using forged pistons instead of chocolate. The whole experience was also tainted by a dealer with a very bad attitude and an inability to be able to tell when an engine was buggered and seemed to think the best way to diagnose it was to thrash it along country roads at 114mph (which they seem to forget contained a tracker that text alerts above a set speed....) which sped along the engine's demise rather well.
Mind you, the Evo X FQ330 I replaced it with hasn't been much better. AYC pump and SST gearbox are currently awaiting warranty replacement approval from Mitsubishi after only 17,000 miles (and that's £11,500 worth of replacements if your're out of warranty!!!) , and the lacquer on the wheels is actually falling off in chunks. What happened to those brilliantly built Japanese cars of the 90s that never went wrong?
