Alarm bells ringing....wise decision?.
Discussion
Hi,
Within a few weeks I'll hopefully be buying my first Scooby. I am still torn between two models (05/55 blob or 06/07 Hawk) but have a good idea of what I want and what to pay.
Now, I'm not sure if this is within PH rules to name them, so I will not, but I called and enquired about a WRX in the PH classifieds which was being offered by a dealer.
I asked about the "full Subaru Service History" which was mentioned, the chap on the other end of the phone then told me "it's got some Service History, not all Subaru but it is up to date". I asked whether it had a Cambelt change, (on an 06 plate) - he told me it had not had one. I know servicing these days isn't cheap, but surely on a low mileage car (as advertised) it's good form to keep it Subaru or reputable indy serviced?.
I appreciated the guys honesty, it saved me a long distance trip to see a car which was arguably not the one for me - kudos for that. Although the sin of declaring a FSSH when it doesn't have one throws up a few doubts, not having had a Belt, or the fact it therefore could have had a haircut during its time has put me off. I would imagine that a 2.5 engine needs one every 5 years or 40k, leaving a 7 year gap is a risk I'm not prepared to put my money on.
It's taken me a long time to get the cash together, hard work and saving, but not wanting to tarnish the rep of what might be an honest dealer, did I do the right thing in walkng away?.
Cheers
Pete
