Wrx MY04 oil consumption
Discussion
Hello,
The dream of impreza ownership has not lasted long:
After buying my impreza I checked all levels and pressures etc. oil was on the low side so I topped it up (magnates 5w30 a1 fully syn). Had a 250 mile drive so checked oil before and it was nearly at full level. Checked engine morning after long drive (cold engine) and its hovering around low line. I'm confident I'm not imagining this as I've been checking it really often. It's using an alarming amount of oil. I'm about to return home (250 miles again) and have a litre of oil with me so I will update this aft.
Exhaust has not a small amount of black on it and I think feels a bit oily/greesy at the tip. Car seems to run fine and gave 26 mpg. I can't tell if its down on power as I haven't had it long. Subaru services it about 6k ago.
I've left a message with my local scooby Motorsport guy to get it booked in next week.
I have googled tons but obviously this could be a number of things.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
TB

Mine doesn`t use any and its quite old now.
Worth a recheck just in case?
Could be anything from a leak somewhere easy like sump plug, oil filter or cam covers (common problem) or even something as serious as piston rings or heavily weeping turbo seals but those would make it quite smokey from the exhaust.
Have a good check for leaks and recheck the levels I reckon, if no luck get it looked at.
All cars get a bit of black around the exhaust, that doesn`t look anything overly heavy.

Thanks guys. It's half full. Going for a 250 mile drive and have spare oil with me so ill probably check half way. Ill update this afternoon and check a few of the mentioned things this evening. Not got a lot of time on my hands the next few weeks so think its best to get it in the shop depending on this afternoons consumption.
Well I've just covered 270 miles and its either used none or not very much.
I'm even more confused now. I put 800 ml in last week and 200 ml in yesterday. What the heck is going on. Taking a litre between services can't be right.
Maybe ill just keep a v close eye on it. I'm pretty confused now.

5w30 is a touch thin as oil goes even on a standard car mate-these are low drag mpg oils ,at higher oil temps it may not give enough protection to engine and turbo if you like to push the car.
i,ve never owned an impreza that did,nt use a fair bit of oil-always seems strange myself the way that for 500 miles it,ll drink nothing at all and then need half a litre all at once.
i tend to think that a lot of oil gets thrown about during cornering that ends up in the breathers and air intake and tmic, also yhe thinner oils are probably more prone to this anyway.
my present car is having the rear crankshaft oil seal sorted atm-even with that leaking oil consumption still was,nt that bad although the rear of the gbox/sump was coated in oil deposits.
with tuned cars i always vent the breathers to a catchcan- this has reduced oil consumption markedly(??)and excludes oil mist from the air inlet.

Well, mine was a tad over on oil when I bought it in Sept, I thought i'll wait and let it burn, still waiting!
Am gonna change it but.....
Am sure they all different.
Maybe oil choice
As a starter I'd try run o the mill 10-40w semi, any will do
give this a couple of thou miles and see how it is

If the specified oil grade is 5w30 and assuming its more likely to burn oil when its warm, I think a 5w40 or thicker would be a wiser choice. This gives you the advantage of easier cranking and better proection when cold as the oil will be pumped quicker when cold due to the lower viscosity (5). The thicker oil when warm (40) will make it less likely to burn oil when warm. Am gonna change it but.....

yeah, that's what I said
Not quite since you suggested a 10w40. 10 being the grade when cold which is obviously thicker than a 5. Since we are only interested in viscosity change when warm to reduce oil consumption I see no benefit in changing this. Intact long term using a thicker oil when cold will increase engine wear as its harder and slower to pump a thicker oil.He has said he did a 270 mile trip without using any, probably warm by then
My post 10-40 or whatever wasn't meant to be taken literally, 5-40 10-40 whatever, just try a different oil
it wont make that much difference 5-40 or 10 40
people look into this too much, you're not running the space shuttle
