Diesel SH Foresters
Discussion
Indeed they are the Devil's fuel! I came from a PPP Forester 2.5XT which my Missus wrote off unfortunately. Being sensible I went for a diesel (much better economy and more room). Its pretty much faultless, a bit squashy/roly poly and therein lies it's vice.
Its dull, I'm bored with it, and I miss my Turbo every time I drive it. But, its very sensible, capable etc etc blah blah blah.

Its not just the Forester thats mundaine. I have the Impreza variant and its a good motorway muncher, but a bit on the bland side. Thankfully there is an under the counter remap available for the derv block which takes it from 150 to 180 bhp which with the torque increase does liven it up a fair bit.
ScoobySimon: I haven't yet, but had it planned for this year through a friendly Subaru tech who has done a few as its a dealer option, not an aftermarket remap. He reports no problems, and certainly the owner of a remapped one hasn't reported any issues and is convinced in 3rd gear plus its faster than his classic WRX.
However, things have just taken a turn for the worst now. I have the car booked in to a dealer on Tuesday for what I hoped had been a dying glowplug (sounds like bag of spanners when cold, but ok when hot). I've just discovered the car is now using oil, about 1L /1000 miles Now I'm hoping the 2 are linked in a good way, but I fear not. Tuedsay will tell, but my run of bad luck says its scrap. Which means I'll be leaving the diesel behind and looking for something else. If it is minor, then ofcouse I will be back in the market
JGM: I know of you by reputation, and whilst all the diesels could do with it, I do think it would be a very limited market. Which would probably be a non worthwhile outlay for you. last time I asked Iain about it, he said he was thinking about it, but the costs for the remap would be expensive for the the demand. I don't know if he went ahead with the buy as I shelved the plans for the WRXD GT. I'd say it depends on how many of them you'd think you'd do. Afterall, they stopped producing the WRXD and now only sell Forrester and Legacy diesels.
As I said above, if the fault with mine is minor, then JGM, I'd love to hear from you with your views.

I think most owners of the diesel subaru range, unlike some here admittedly, are not into tuning and those who are wanting a remap wont understand that there is a difference other than "getting it chipped" and therefore would just pay for a generic map. Its not lilely anyone can compete with that doing a custom map and recover the cost of the ecutek software. However I will look into it and talk to ecutek.

I have found with mine (09MY Outback, 92k miles), particularly when cold, you need to leave it for a couple of hours for the oil level to settle - it seems to take ages for oil to return to the sump. I can relate to the glow-plug issues over the last couple of week too though. I found it was would start straight away after cycling the ignition (& hence the glow plugs) half a dozen times.
As an aside - the remap sold by Carstins, Crossroads et all was done by Superchips - it is not Subaru's own.
I drove a demonstrator at Crossroads a while ago & it is one of the nicest, smoothest aftermarket remaps I have ever driven (& I have driven quite a few!). Superchips have a special offer of £365 at the moment too.
My car is booked in for it a week on Saturday.

Interested if anyone has any experience of Lichfields diesel remap?
The power graphs appear (alough are somewhat tricky to read) to offer a smoother boost of power and torque from much lower revs than Superchips which appear to follow the standard curves until the standard peak power/torque then hang on longer and higher.
All the rest of his 'stuff' seems to be top notch; any reason to doubt this would be anything otherwise....?
