What have I got myself into?
Discussion
Well after not much thought, very little research and a quick look round the car, I've decided to take the plunge and buy my first Impreza.
Saw the car advertised at a local dealer on autotrader last week, went and had a look today and thought might as well.........
Its a 2006 WRX, 50,000 miles, service history to 40,000 miles and seemed in pretty good condition.
Noticed there was no stamp on the 50,000 mile service, which includes the cambelt. They're going to do the cambelt and service, give it a years MOT and I should be able to pick it up at the weekend/start of next week
It should be a bit of a change from the 12 year old fiesta I've been pooteling around in for the last year.
Fingers crossed I've bought a good one
So what have I got my self into people?

I doubt an exhaust will increase your insurance that much. One of my friends bent over to pay for Impreza insurance - he got a decent price, but let's face it, they will always be a relatively expensive car to insure, so he stil paid a fair whack, I think he was insured with Admiral. A new catback for him for cost £30 to the insurer, which I think was just "admin cost" to update his file.
If I were paying the cost of insuring an Impreza, I'm damn sure I'd be paying a few more quid to get the Impreza noise, which imo is one of the main draws of the car. Might be worth checking with your insurer what they'd charge, you might be pleasantly surprised. Then get straight on the net and order a Blitz Nur Spec or a Crawford Gymkhana.

It gets better and better!
Thanks for the advice with the exhaust, I did another quote to get an Idea, if it had an aftermarket exhaust already fitted it would cost me a total of 7 british pounds more to insure than the standard car
So I guess £30 quid to add one after will be about right, seems like a bit of a bargain, but it's definitely something I'll be asking about when I take out the policy.

Just check the rear shocks - they fitted inverted shocks 2005 onwards, and they seize and fail, the rears most often. Any graunching noises on low speed manouvering, or settling when parking or untowards handling from the rear (sudden oversteer mid bend) could be down to failed and "sticking" shocks.
If they've not failed, get them re-greased properly and consider fitting grease nipples to keep them lubricated.
If they're not inverted type struts, just enjoy and don't worry.

GRRR phone call from dealer this morning, car won't be ready til thursday or friday now as the engine management light they said they would sort needed a new part ordering and it only came in today. Didn't ask what it was but will find out when I pick it up, interested to know what the problem was.
Still on the plus side at least it sounds like they're doing a proper job on it rather than a botch, itching to get my dirty paws on it though!

Alternatively, drive off boost for the last few miles.
IMprezas have a convective water circuit which circulates water around the core of the turbo even with everything turned off. Whilst driving gently the last few miles are always advisable, no special precautions are necessary.Cheers for the info.
Finally getting the car today, phoned the dealer this morning, all the works done and they're just finishing the valeting, a few jobs yto do this morning then off to pay for it and pick it up
Hopefully the weather will stay good and can get out for decent drive in it this afternoon

Well picked it up this afternoon, well happy! A massive step up from the fiesta in every way, although my record of only owning cars with tape decks still stands!
The sound when the turbo spools up is pretty addictive although I've mostly been stuck in traffic with it, but the few times I broke away and got to put my foot down a bit the car felt great and really good fun to drive.
Planning to get up early tomorrow for a proper run out around the Suffolk/Norfolk countryside, hopefully at 5am the roads will be quiet, fingers crossed it wont rain tonight and doesn't drop too cold.
