Second hand sports cat... Good idea?
Discussion
I want some improves on my stock 2005 wrx and am looking at either mapping or rolling road. I have bought a pro drive back box and a K&N panel filter which I am proposing to install this weekend.
It seems there are great benefits to removing the cat in the down pipe but I cannot be bothered with removing it every MOT.... So I was thinking going to a scrap yard or the like and getting a sports cat off a car.
The question being:
1) how long do Cats last (is there a chance the one I get will be broken)
2) will I notice the difference between my stock CAT and a sports cat?
Thanks guys

Save yourself some grief come MOT time.
Decat the uppipe (PreCat) before the turbo and the scrubber cat after the main cat at the end of the downpipe.
That leaves the main standard cat in place and that's all you need to do to get desired results from a remap together with your flat panel air filter, and it will get you through the emissions test come MOT time without having to remove or replace anything.
You'll still make 270bhp thereabouts, a big leap on from the standard output (and you'll feel it) and it will drive just lovely.
Job done!!
ETA:
Cats can and do last the lifetime of the car, just keep putting in proper 99RON fuel to keep your engine and everything else running smooth. Don't use 95RON unless you really have to.
Don't waste your money on a sports cat when your main cat will do just fine. If you decide down the line to modify your car further then is the time to go fully decat and find yourself an MOT friendly tester.

It's says here its 100 cell. But I am sure I read somewhere they are more. Anyway, this will pass MOT as it was part of the official upgrade to the WR1...
