With my Dad having owned a red (with gold wheels!) MY99 car back when it was new, I've always wanted one of my own and now am justifying it on the grounds of needing something fun to commute in for the winter. I have a few questions I'm hoping you people can answer.

Firstly, are there any truth in the stories of MY00 cars not being as potent? Other than not liking the wheels, I prefer the colour coding on the MY00 cars but don't want one if the performance isn't as good.

Secondly, just how fast are they in standard 215bhp form? I know its very subjective but I always remember my Dad's feeling very quick, though I was small at the time! I own a Clio Trophy (which I'm keeping as its a hoot!) but I'm hoping in addition to vastly superior traction that an Impreza will be notably quicker in a straight line? I also expect it to be a lot softer than the Trophy but that's no bad thing really.

Finally...what are these cars actually selling for? Is £2k a decent budget for a straight one with good history? I could pay more but don't want to pay over the odds.

Many thanks.

Hi

I had a 94 UK turbo saloon (Autocar 04/94 wink) and have had a year 2000 UK turbo estate, am currently on a 2004 SL estate with PPP but thinking of going back to a Honda S2000.

Of the 1994 and year 2000 I prefer the year 2000 by a mile.
It had stiffer suspension than the 1994 and it drove a lot better than the 1994 one.

I dont think there is much between the 2000 and the 2004 to be honest but maybe the 2004 is better just because it is newer, it certainly doesnt feel it has moved on much refinement wise, still a fair amount of road noise and the feel of no sound deadening but they do say if it aint broke and people like it, i'd have prefered the 2004 to be a bit more refined and quieter in my old age!

I would pick a year 2000/01 over any before it

Year 2000 I would look for a good miler 75k for about £2000 and I wouldnt buy one that has been messed about with

2K is very cheap for an 00 car. I would personally always buy the best i could for the money i have. If your budget is 2K then you'll get 2K's worth of car.

If you find one that meets all your criteria, not done galactic mileage and has FSSH, all for 2K, i would be very suspicious as there will be something very wrong with it for that kind of money. That is too cheap IMHO. I would be walking away. Nice ones with that criteria are going for £3.5-£4K and should be driving well for that money.

Don't worry about standard power outputs, they vary up and down like a yoyo from car to car regardless of manufacturers official figures. The older the car and the more mileage it's done will have consequences on power outputs due to naturally losing compression over the years as the cylinder and piston rings wear.

A couple of small mods and a remap will sort that out bigtime!! See Simon - JollyGreenMonster for a remap on 00yr cars.

They are still out there

in 2008 I bought my yr 2000 1 owner with 115k on for £1500, there was a problem, needed a MAF sensor as it wasnt boosting
it was in East Mids on french plates (UK car) and I lived in France at the time, paid for it, flew over, drove it home

just bought a 2004 SL WRX estate in WR blue with 72k, FSH and PPP from new for a good price
had it 2 months and no issues so far

seen lots of good ones with 40 - 60 k miles under 3k with one or two owners (Classics)

Thanks very much for the responses, interesting to hear that £3k could be nearer the mark for a good example. I had thought dealers asking £3.5k were having a laugh but maybe not! Only other issue is I'm up in Scotland so finding a nice one that isn't a million miles away is a fair bit harder. Will look at both MY99 and MY00 cars and budget for a remap at some stage, so the search goes on!

Many thanks again.

No, I was however going to say that if you were closer I could let you have a shot of mine but I'm in Glasgow so that wont work.

Turbo 2000 cars are ok, not the quickest completely standard but definately great fun. Any you can easily make them as quick as you want.

Mine was pretty much standard when I got it, except for a full decat exhaust and panel filter.
I've fitted a different turbo, that I picked up 2nd hand for £100, and had it remapped. 335bhp and 319 lb/ft of torque so def no slouch now.

Get registered on Scottish Scoobies, scoobynet etc etc at least that way you'll have first look at any cars that come up for sale. They pop up every now and again.

Half of the battle now is that a lot of "classic" subarus are being broken for parts as they're worth more in parts than as a complete car.

Good luck!

Edit - Some cars varying in price and mileage but shows you what to expect. shame they're all down south!

I've a MY00 Turbo 2000 5 door, that I'm thinking about changing.
I'm in Edinburgh.

It's a (nearly) totally standard UK car, with good history.

If you are interested I might consider selling it.

Great cars. Had a 2000 my wagon, now on a 56 plate hawkeye. They are quick out of the box, but exhaust, filter remap etc can get between 250 to 290bhp. It is addictive, and once you are used to the power you can get carried away modding to get more power. Chuck enough money at it and you can get v large increases in power. Best thing I did for not much cash was to upgrade the breaks with better pads, braided hoses and better fluid.

I've got a 182 and a MY00 wagon...182 is probably more fun to drive out of the box and almost as quick as a the wagon. A few mods and a remap on v5\6 cars but retaining the standard turbo should see 280 of each and a much nicer torque curve...add a thicker rear ARB and a decent geometry set up and the 182 will not keep up with it. Keep any mods sensible and you will have a capable, practical and reliable thing.

If you want an example of how to waste tens of thousands of pounds on one take a look at my project thread here; http://bbs.scoobynet.com/projects-40/681471-wagon-...

UPDATE: Have now bought a MY00 hatch with PPP and couldn't be happier with it (assuming it comes back okay from its service today!)

Thanks to the guy offering a car, would have been in touch if I hadn't bought mine.

Ps you will find the lights are rubbish. Can upgrade with hella quad headlights, I did this and they were good. There are also HID kits. The driving lamps are great, but only come on with full beam so it's really dark when driving in traffic!

Nice car, mine's nicer though. tongue out

Mind if I ask how much you paid for it? (PM if you want) just to get an idea of what to ask for mine, if I sell it.

Oh and I have the 6 spoke gold wheels with winter tyres ready to go on it.

Have PM'd you. Do you mean 6-spoke speedlines or the 6-spoke MY00 Subaru wheels? Sorry should have asked that in PM!

Thanks for the message.
Decent price for the car, which looks in great condition.

The wheels are same as the ones in the ebay ad in the other thread.

But I'm not selling them yet, unless I sell the car. They're going on this week.

I think I'll probably keep the car through this winter then try and decide what to do.
Only real problem is the rear arches are rusting a bit. Which will require a bit of attention to fix properly.

Thanks to you both, I am very pleased with the condition of it considering it has lived out all its life and will continue to do so! No sign of rust on the arches yet but I shall keep an eye out and pressure wash it weekly to get the salt off.

I can understand reluctance to sell, I genuinely can't think of any car car under £20k I'd want instead. The blend of performance, sound, practicality and (fingers crossed and touch wood!) reliability at this price point has to be unbeatable. Only issue is the fuel economy (I'll do roughly 250 miles/week in it) but the character of the flat 4 and the blistering acceleration excuse that completely!
