New Hatch/Saloon STi
Discussion
Hello there,
Getting bored with the porker now so thinking about a newish STi (dare I say it, even a hatch!)... So:
I recall some engine issues on the earlier hatches - have these been fixed?
What do they map to on the standard blower (JGM, Francis), and what supporting mods are required?
Is suspension still an issue (knocking shocks)?
Anybody put a decent (loudish) exhaust on one, and do you get a good traditional sound track?
Any views on any other aspects would be appreciated?!
Tempted by the hatch given I have 3 year old twins... I have thought about an Evo X, but they seem to have gotten a bit too soft, which means a 9 would be the only way, and at 15K miles a year servicing might be a pain...
Probably be an after Christmas purchase given my impending wedding...
Thanks all....

I still think the hatches are fugly and not as good a drive as late newage but if you must go hatch get an STi or later WRX/STi. Don't go anywhere near a WRX hatch unless you want to be very disappointed having just come from a Porker and 2005 Sti before that.
Personally.....If it were my dosh and i had hatch money i would opt for a Spec C RA/R or Litchfield Type25, Newage of course. Fast, lightweight, superb handling and look bloody good!!
If you buy a hatch and it's had an engine rebuild all well and good, and no reason why you couldn't take it to 400bhp. Running a 20% methanol mix i'm confident it could hit 380+ on the standard setup.
Hatch STi is running just a fraction over a bar so plenty of room for manouvre, but you'll need an adjustable fuel pressure reg to squeeze a bit more fuel through the injectors.
Suspension wise i'd run blistein/eibach rather than coilovers, brakes should be ok with a change of pads.

This is where I read it...
My main concern is the engine issues. However, I recall the consensus being map related!? Anyway, one of you fine fellows would remap it for me
The saloon would work for me. A hatch is not a must.

Get one with warranty for peace of mind?
But then I can't mess with it I would have to have a thunderous exhaust I miss that so much
This is my old 2008 STI hatch -
It was a non PPP version which I fitted a Magnaflow cat-back exhaust and air filter to and ran 328bhp on the dyno. Prior to me purchasing the vehicle it did not have the reflashed ECU but had done 28000 miles when I bought it without issue.
I then had the engine rebuilt fully forged and conservatively mapped by Bob Rawle to 365bhp. He was confident that with headers and decat we could get close to 400bhp on the standard turbo but I sold the car prior to this (originally we were going to put an MD321V, FMIC on it and go for 500bhp but that never materialised).
Suspension was Eibachs Pro-Kit springs, front and rear White ARB's and drop links - was a very impressive handling car, for sure.
I'd recommend one unreservedly, plenty of great second hand cars out there.

Really liking the hatch and saloon.
Mapped a saloon with a built engine last month to 420/420 was awesome.
The pistons are the standards engines let down. But most of the bad ones will have been replaced now. The 2010 onwards engines seem to be better.
Its also possible to add more sensitivity to the knock control on the standard ecu which also helps protect the pistons.
