I have a bug eye 2002 WRX which I use for track racing.
I am looking to get a set of wheels with slicks on for dry days.

The current tread tyres are 225/45/R17.

What would you recommend in terms of wheel size and tyre size and where would I look for tyres?

Thanks

For lightness stick with 17" wheels.

You could get 17" x 8J or 9J rims to run some decent wide low profile rubber but you'll need a low offset to keep the inside of the wheel away from the brake caliper and dampers. You either have to roll your arches or cut them and run spats instead because at that width they will poke outside of the arches and rub like mad.

Depending on how much money you want to spend on wheels and tyres decides what kind of solution you run. Don't be tempted to run 18" alloy wheels because it just means more unsprung weight at each corner of the car and 18" tyres and wheels cost more than 17".

However, if you bought some Magnesium wheels you could run 18"/19" wheels and they'd be lighter than 16"/17" alloy wheels.

What's your budget?

I've got a set of WRX alloys buyeye style which were refurbed, they have part warn slicks fitted to them, the wheels have never been used since painting, there are a anthracite.
The tyres are ones that were brought second hand and if I remember correctly they are ex touring car practice slicks, so have a lot of life left in them.

I'm assuming you have a baffled sump(or better)? I wouldn't even think about running slicks without one unless you're prepared to risk oil surge and a lunched engine.
