Just a quick whimper to a friendly ear...

My wife got a job abroad, so we're moving which means selling up. I'd put off selling the Subaru, I just didn't feel like I've had enough time with it. I bought it on a bit of a whim, just wanted to find out what all the fuss was about really but went for a nice one - WRX PPP wagon with SL spec so leather and stuff.

It has absolutely blown me away.

We had a rocky start because it had failed shocks, and a tore my hair out finding the correct replacement parts. After settling on KYB shocks and Eibach Pro-R springs, and the blessing of FB Tuning not too far away, I got it sorted without bankrupting myself and was very happy with the results. After this the car has done nothing but grow on me and make me smile. A car that truly inspires confidence and hooliganism in equal measure. I've done 1,000 miels in a weekend including the Hartside pass, keeping up with (and occasionally pulling away from) a 993 and a 350bhp Audi S4 and a BMW 1M, and never did it feel like the poor relation. I've driven my wife and baby son and dog around in it, slung my bike in the back, and it's seen me through snow on the motorway and floods and some of the absolutely most thrilling late night B-Road runs I never expected to have. Not once has it felt unruly or dangerous, not once has it felt like it's coaxed me out of my or it's comfort zone. It's just egged me on and shown me the way.

I've loved every moment of it.

I thought selling it would be an absolute chore. I was waiting for an endless line of knuckle draggers and test pilots. To counter this I put it up at a relatively strong price, took good photos (but not overpriced) and advertised on Autotrader as a first port of call. Within 3 days I'd have 5 calls all from really decent sounding people and had 3 viewings lined up. The first guy to see it came along, looked it over, we went out for a half hour blat, and he was hooked. "Yup, I'll take it". Didn't even haggle. Car sold within 5 days of advertising with absolutely no hassle whatsover. Completely blew away my preconceptions about the typical Subaru Owner.

So now for the first time in a decade I'm left carless and forlorn. I've got no idea what I'll be driving when I land on foreign soil, apart from it will be a great deal worse than waht I've driven thus far here. Already I'm looking at autotrader eying up STi's! Why oh why couldn't they have made a blob eye Sti Wagon (they probably did, my Subaru Nerd-knowledge isn't that great).

So, with a heavy heart, tomorrow I drive "my" car to it's new owner. It'll be a dull rush hour run on A-roads. Hardly a fitting end.

Sad to see her go, and finally I "get" the love for Subarus.

Very, very hard to replace (says a man who sold his STi for a Cayman S!). I will be back in one soon enough...

DON'T SELL IT BRING IT HERE!!! (I assume you are coming to Australia and its probably too late)

I sold my old STi before moving to Aus and I MASSIVELY regret it. Cars are ridiculously more expensive here to the point where you won't get a car worth driving for less than $10k (or 6.5k gbp) ie I am now driving a 2000 MX-5 which, don't get me wrong, is fine, but its not a patch on my scoob, and it cost me MORE to buy!

Your's is a very nice, tidy car though and I totally agree with you about these cars. Its still a good option here too....its just that you are going to pay *uncomfortably* more for it when you get here.

Good luck with the move!

I absolutely would have done except that they insist you've owned the car a year to import it, and I've only had it 8 months. I think it's about $20k AUD worth.

Hi WeirdNeville,
Sorry to hear this mate . It looked it fantastic condition too . I've been there quite a few times myself.
All I can say is once you've had a scoob it stays in your blood. Yes due to your circumstances you have had to let her go , but try and aim ahead for that day you get another , which I bet wont be long.
Best of luck in Oz .. and when you do just think you'll get better weather than us here to enjoy it! biggrin
