Hi guys,

I've decided to get rid of my Octavia RS and get myself an Impreza Wagon. The performance, AWD and being able to shove my mountain bike striaght in the back sounds like the perfect combo.

It looks like 4 -4.5 k should get me a WRX blob eye in reasnoble condition. I have looked around the net looking for a model break down to check I haven't missed anything but can't find a thing.

My question really is: am I missing anything model wise? I've spotted the Sti bugeyes but they don't really float my boat. I've also spotted the GB270 Wagons but they are going to be a bit too pricey. Is there anything around the 03/04 era that I should keep an eye out for? The SL with leather looks ok but I'm not overly fussed as my mountain bike covered in mud will just make a mess of it.

I think the best solution is a wrx wagon with either a ppp or some kind of stage 1 upgrade. Or is there a special edition/model that would suit me better.

An opinion from the experts would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Jim

Just find yourself a normal WRX wagon whether it's BlobEye or BugEye. Key criteria are full service history whether dealer or indy specialist, lowest mileage you can find and nicest conditon. If it's got all that likely the engine will be in fine fettle.

Don't fuss about PPP examples or any of that malarky unless you really want it. Get a nice clean unmolested car instead saving yourself some money over a PPP'd car and get the minor mods + remap done with the money you've saved. Simple Air Filter and exhaust mods plus remap will get you a much better result than PPP in terms of general everyday driving and performance.

I'm not rubbishing PPP and if you do buy a PPP'd wagon fair enough but you do pay more for that than a non-PPP car and PPP is just a generic one size fits all solution that may or may not provide 255-265bhp.

Custom mods and remap will see 270-280bhp and near enough 290-300lbft torque.

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like a plan; pretty much as I thought.

I'll maybe get some pics up when I've sorted it out.

There are a few Bugeye STi wagons knocking about, rare as fook and full of "JDMness".

If your getting a wagon consider putting the bike on the roof!

I used a 3 bike rack on the back of mine. I put 3 bikes on that rack and took them to Scotland. Worked a treat!!

Wagon load arears are not as big as you think, long enough sure but narrow between the rear shocks,i tend to use the wifes Meriva for anything big so the mtb will need the wheels out for sure before it goes in the back, rear rack or roof mount would be my tip also.

I'd rather have a roof rack on the roof with luggage etc..., rather than bikes. I have a downhill bike and that is too heavy to faff around getting it on and off the roof. Bike rack on the back makes a lot more sense and is so much easier to get the bikes on and off and to dismantle.

Try getting into a car park with height restrictions (as many have) with bikes on the roof.

I've got a vrs hatch at the moment which fits a bike or two in easy. If I don't have enough space I have bike carriers for the roof and a roof box if required. With this in mind i'm sure the impreza wagon will be big enough for what I need and easier to get a single mountain bike in when it's empty. I might even take the rear seats out on a semi permanent basis.

Thanks for the input gents. I'm sure with the options mentioned I'll be able to cope and the only real negative being the fuel consumption, however my daily driver averages 55mpg and it's only 2 miles to work :-)

Well gents, my RS is up for sale but no takers. I think it's up for the right money. Cleaned it, decent pics, detailed write up and the car is a bit of a gem imo (FSH, cambelt last year, 1 previous owner etc). I thought it would be gone in days but it's been up nearly 2 weeks now without even a phone call.

A guy a bit further North emailed saying he was struggeling to shift his, but has now sold it for similair cash to mine and his is higher mileage as not as good nick.

What is going on?!

I've spotted a possible wagon at a dealer nearby. Think I'm going to see how much a px is.

Nail on Head!!

Chop it in p/ex rather than wait forever to do a private sale with an extra £250-£500 coming in.

If the VRS in good condition you should get a decent deal on a 2005 WRX wagon.

Looking forward to seeing your new wagon thumbup

I've got a roof rack for carrying bikes with my wagon. As he other guys say, the boot space is ok, but it's not really big. You can get two bikes in with the front wheels off and the back seats down.

ps if you go down the roof rack route I have a spare set of bars that fit the standard roof rails (I had to get another set when I swapped cars to the last hawk eye car). Pm me if you are interested.
