I'm a big Soob fan and always fancied an Impreza, not because of there rally pedigree and outright speed but for there reliability and build quality but have always been put off by the high fuel consumption of the 2Lt plus engines.
Just wondered if anyone on here owns an 07 or newer 1.5 hatchback.
If so what are they like to drive as I have read about them been a bit slow is that right?
What sort of fuel consumption are you getting?
Are they expensive to have serviced and most of all are they reliable?
Cheers Kevin.

The worst car I have ever driven in my life. Had one as a hire car when my STI was getting it's 30k and it was without down the most hateful, underpowered pile of automatic cack my arse has ever had the displeasure to come into contact with.

Are they really that bad? That could be why there are so few about!

Why aren't you considering the diesel option either new or used?

Go well, economical, smooth as silk, utterly reliable. Very highly regarded diesel also found in the Legacy which is a heavier car and still goes well.

Easy to increase torque to very decent numbers on a completely standard car with a simple ECU generic flash.

Indeed they are woefully underpowered. Even the 2.0na is an asthmatic lump and very very slow as the 4WD system saps performance.

OP as a minimum you need the 2.0na and of the two I'd get the sport which was above 150bhp IIRC (might have been 170bhp). Or get a diesel.

Thanks for the replies,
As I said at the start I'm not interested in performance or 2l engines which drink petrol as if it cheap to buy!!
I also wouldn't look at a diesel mainly because we only do short journeys and we couldnt justify the extra purchase price of a diesel car compared to petrol.
What I would like to know about is fuel consumption and how they compare to official figures and how expensive they are to have serviced and general running costs and most importantly what if anything goes wrong with them.
Ta Kevin.

Having owned a sport for 5 years, and now own the diesel, I can say without out doubt don't even consider buying the 1.5l impreza. I had 1 as a courtesy car, never ever agin, I'd rather catch a bus!

If you're only doing short journeys you're not going to be using that much fuel whatever you drive. Be good to yourself if you're buying a hatchback and get an S-WRX minimum.

That way you'll enjoy your short journeys because you won't be driving a wheezy 1.5 and you've still got something for the weekend sir.

Point and squirt all the way!! wink

We ran a 1.5R for a year. The thinking was 4x4 grip for the bad winters here in t'North and a low insurance group for our son.
Ok on both counts, but:
Slower than a slow thing on a slow day in Slowville.
All the basic kit is there. Comfy, fairly anonymous, but as stated above not enough torque or BHP to overcome the 4x4 inertia.
For about £4k we upgraded to a WRX hatchback which has 230 BHP. Super car and the same MPG!
Just had to chuck our son off the insurance as at 27 with a clean licence he added £800 to the premium.

<SHUDDER>

You have brought back terrible memories of the 1.5 Impreza I lived with for 6 months.
Yes I actually bought one on the premise that it made economic sense and save me money running 1 of these instead of a WRX paperbag
Can vouch that it is the most awful/hateful/nasty/gutless/thirsty/ POS that should never have been brought out! Could not wait to get out of it! Lost £1000s getting rid of it
The figures don't look too bad saying it gets average ( off memory ) 32/33mpg? That may be all fine well and dandy going downhill with the wind behind you , but try driving it in everyday coditions. It averaged 26mpg if I was lucky ,and had to be thrashed just to get up to speed if you were joining motorway traffic running at 70mph. Honestly it was terrible frown

The hilarity / icing on the cake had to be when I parked it in Glasgow city centre.. on the right hand side of here:..

When I went to leave the car could not even get up that hill in 1st gear! I had to change the gearbox to "low ratio" ( or whatever the opposite is of normal is ) to get up the hill revving the nuts off it doing 10mph! banghead

shout PLEASE , I BEG YOU , DO NOT BUY 1 OF THESE!

Ok, looks like a 1.5 is not such a good buy after all.
What about a 2.0L GX Sport? There's one for sale nearby,it's a 2003, has had 2 owners, done roughly 54000 miles, fssh and looks very smart. What sort of mpg would it give me and what sort of things go wrong at that age?

I had a GX. It was fine, still a little slow, but extremely reliable. Only thing that failed on it was the lambda sensor in five years of ownership. Think the sports are about 30bhp more than the base GX model so it will be safer in overtaking. MPG will be 35mpg if driven lightly. Mid 20s around town. Superb cars for the money and very comfy.

At that age it should still be reliable if it's been looked after. They're pretty bomb-proof. Get an inspection if you're worried.

We live on a fairly steep hill and needed to go downhill first in the 1.5, make a U turn to take a run-up, just to get uphill.
Maybe these sell Ok in Holland?
I've bought two sensible cars in my life and regretted both of them.
The WRX is great!
