piston slap getting bad - bin the car/break it?
Discussion
ok, my bug has had "the slap" for around a year. it been getting steadily worse and now stays slappy when warm, is using lots of oil and it is (steadily) getting worse.
so, the rebuild cost is around £1k (plus the clutch needs doing).
the car is my daily driver and i dont have £1k sitting around spare at the moment (let alone spending it on a car worth a couple of grand).
so, options:
sell it as is, get what i can.
garage it, use the snotter and wait till i can throw money at it
drive it till it goes bang and then break it
probably more options i cannot think of.
over to you guys.

pmsl.... I sold my old WRX engine when the oil pump failed for £300. The bottom end was FUBAR but the rest was fine.
Gearbox if it's still quiet and smooth is worth £350-£450.
Rear Diff £50-£100.
Turbo £50-£100
Inlet Manifold £50-£100 (more if you carry out a TGV deletes).
Propshaft £75-£125
Driveshafts £50 pair x 2
There's over a grand there and that's only a few mechanical bits. There's still the interior, doors, wheels, bonnet, radiator etc etc...
Worth breaking for bits if you have the time and space to do it.

Maybe a set of forged pistons/rods and nitrided crank would be nice.
Failing that....Can i get a price for your wings, front bumper/spoiler and grill please
oi! its not dead yet!Failing that....Can i get a price for your wings, front bumper/spoiler and grill please
think its going to hibernate in one of the garages while i decide what to do.
means i'll have to get the golf out and get it going (2 years standing, rescued it for £125 - havent got it working yet)

Any updated goodies on the car op that may get you a few more pennies than standard parts?
If its fairly standard I wouldn't hope for
Much selling it complete with a noisy bottom end

spoken to the specialists and i think its going to hibernate for a while while i do the work and upp the power. a lot.
re the person who asked what piston slap is, google impreza piston slap - its pretty common but isnt usually fatal to the engine.
Hang on - £1000 to fix it, that can't be right surely?
When my Classic developed it it was fixed under a "good grace" type arrangement with the supplying dealer since so many of them had it (UK 98). Because they'd done so many the dealers had it down to a fine art to be able to just replace the affected piston (which I have as a paperweight!) - they didn't have to pull the whole engine apart, just take off a head.
Car has done another 80,000 + miles since so I don't think they were just chancing it!
From memory (as it was some years ago) there are some access points that enable them to press out the gudgeon pin, whip out the piston, and replace. IIRC it was one of the rear pistons (number 3?).

ve googled and Youtubed, sounds nastier than it is unless you're losing compression it seems. And the possibility of it being related to forged pistons seems likely. Gassing Station | Subaru | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
