Just bought a 97 Impreza Wagon turbo which still has the standard exhaust fitted, i will be changing this for a full turbo back decat system but have been told it will then need a remap. Is this correct and possible on these earlier cars, if so anyone know of somewhere in the South wales area who could do this. Thanks in advance.

You shouldn't need a remap but because of the decat and back box being much more free flowing than the stock system and cats you may hit fuel cut.

do you know what boost pressure you are running with the new system?

Uk car?

All being well (fuel pump good, intake pipe good for examples) then as long as said above it doesnt hit fuel cut then it should be okay but would be nice to have it checked with detcans and wideband.

Uk car, it had been for sale in local garage for best part of 2 years so i took a gamble and offered half the asking price which was accepted albeit no mot or warranty. Passed its mot today so i finally got the chance to drive it, running a little on the rough side and nowhere near as quick as the 93 wrx i just sold. Turns out the guy who sold it to the garage had a fully decat exhaust fitted to the car but put the standard one back on for the sale, so im thinking maybe it was already mapped for the decat exhaust and thats why its not running quite right with the standard one. Make any sense ?

What ecu are you using as a standard 97 ecu cant be remapped unless it has a esl board soldered in

No remap required assuming all else is ok with the engine. i have a my97 wagon with exhaust, sport cat and bell mouth. Fuel cut defender and bleed valve to give 16bar boost and a guage to keep an eye on peak boost. Currently on 153000 miles and its been set up like this for 90000 miles. No problems so far.

If you do decide to go down the remap route, ESL http://www.enduringsolutions.com/ would be the most cost effective way to do it. Fitted and mapped is around £550.

Ok thanks for the advice, going to give the car a bit of a service on weekend then look into getting a new exhaust system, local exhaust specialist wants £540 fitted but there is a full system on Ebay for £280 which seems ok.

One thing to remember to buy is some new exhaust studs for the downpipe. They often break when undoing them from the turbo.
