Would advise buying one with a forged engine rebuild have a look at this thread as there's been loads of issues with the UK cars.

The only other alternative is a JDM version which have better residuals and the same engine they use in group N cars which can handle 450bhp comfortably.

Or go after a Blobeye STI (2litre). Older Car, but there are good ones out there, low mileage and minted, bullet proof engines. I have a 2005 WRX, drives like new mate, and on low miles!! Don't overlook because of age!!!
Or as your Man says, JDM?

If you don't want the worry get a 2005 STi. Bullet proof engine, and in my opinion has more character. See my garage - 8K can get you a belter.

Are the 2.5 WRX AND WRX S affected by the engine failures, or just the STi?

Personally i'd get a classic for proper impreza frills. Failing that a blobeye.

After my focus ST the classic feels far lighter and more nimble but without the nice interior. Its more of a drivers car but then the later imprezas are on par weight wise with the focus and they feel it.

Get a P1.

Are the new age cars not stiffer? If you had a standard classic STi vs. newage STi track race, what would win?

I would not be suprised if similarly powered models were very close on a track but the feeling of agility is lost in later cars and replaced with a much greater sense of inertia.
Something well documented.

Shame though, I used to hate the hatch when it came out, but now the looks are seriously growing on me whistle

I am not as against the looks as I was a while back. Its not like the saloon is a peach to look at wink

The fith gear review found the Golf GTI quicker round their track (not a definative test for sure, but a test none the less).

To me the STi is the only option with the new ones.

I have a 2010 STI hatch and 2003 WRX Wagon. The hatch is a great everyday car and does everyone you could ask. It is fast, quiet inside, comfortable, has great grip in all weathers, reasonably well equipped, good boot and is a bit different.

The older Imprezas feel a lot more raw than the new ones, so it really depends on what type of driving experience you want.
