Fit like guys, owned this beast for a month now, its a 2.0 GX (non turbo) 73k, mot till novemeber.

Really couldnt be doing with a crummy hatch back for my first car so did my bike test at 17 and got a 400, saved my all my apprentaship pennys and bought this. Going to wait another month till ive passed my test and turned 18 so insurance is 2k, same amount folk are paying for corsas ect, win. At the moment going to get temp provisional insurance for 2 month and go out with my dad ect.

Plans are to get a pro-drive bonnet (current one had snow fall on it), splitter, sti headlight, sti spoiler and possibly 18" wheels, but cant decide yet.

That's not bad for a first car. Better than any of those little 1.2 stboxes out there. Nice one.

Yes. It's the engine layout and headers that make the burble... Get an Afterburner Votex backbox wink

The seats / interior is standard from the factory, comes with sports seats and momo steering wheel. Going to leave it as it is, no 6x9`s in the parcel shelf!!!!

Google pic but same as mine.

It got a new full system from kwickfit in november with an sti back box. Isnt too loud, you hear the lovely boxter engine rev away, and a bit of a rumble from the back. Theres a cat and what looks like 2 silencers in the mid section, could do away with them for more rumble.

I'm sure I've heard a GX with unequal headers that has the tradition rumble. Sounded lovely.

Whatever you do, do not fit 18s or even 17 Sti size wheels. You'll utterly ruin the handling as the dampers just cannot cope with the extra weight. I had exactly that car as a winter hack years back and tried it on some 17s I had from from an STi for a laugh and it was a LOT slower, and the ride was crashy and, whilst the wider tyres had more grip on a smooth road, on a b road it was totally under-damped. You just don't have the power make the wider tyres work properly. Stick with 16s and 195 absolute max 205 and you'll have a much more fun car to drive.

If you want to fit big wheels, sell it and buy a Corsa.

I have some 18" STI wheels and tyres, practically brand new. Only used on one track day. Centre cap is missing from one, but they're only a fiver to purchase. They are Dunlop sport tyres. I know you have just brought the car and I would have to ask they be picked up, but I could sell you them if you're interested?

Its 17`s that are on it, feels good even with the 50 profile winters, came with 45 profile summers to fit tho ill see how it looks with them on. Would getting sti / pro-drive shocks make any difference if I did fit 18`s?

You do realise you will have to declare all of these changes to your insurer. Given your age, it could get expensive...

Have you done the insurance quote as an 18 year old who has just passed their test? - or have you quoted with a provisional licence?

If you've done the latter, you could be in line for one hell of a shock when you do the former.

That model originally came with 15" wheels, 195s IIRC. The problem is that the 17s and 18s are a chunk heavier and with the 130ish bhp of the engine and the slight increase in rolling diam, you're making the car slower on 17s and 18s and negatively affecting the handling.

They do look crap on the 15s, but the ride and handling is just so much better - beautiful 4 wheel drifts on the skinny tyres whereas on 17s (235s) the handling is much less together.

Re the uprated dampers. You could, but I think there are other component difference on the STi that you would need to swap too - although I could be wrong I've never checked TBH. You'd need to check to see whether the wishbones, etc. are the same too. Sticking 235 sticky tyres on will put a hell of a lot more stress on the standard components. Mine felt really quite odd with them on.

TBH I'd stick with what you have and stick to 205 width tyres so as not to over-tyre the car.

The only changes I would recommend would be a set of Hel brake lines and some SRF fluid to improve pedal feel and fade resistance. Other than that save your money for when insurance is more favourable and you can afford an proper WRX or STi.

That is what I was thinking - this could get expensive, fast, especially if all the mods are declared. Start adding bigger wheels, even though the ones on there are not OEM as it is, the exhaust, the dampers etc and the cost could skyrocket.

If it is insurable, I'd just leave it as it is. Spending a load of money modding a car like this is just not worth it, save the cash. If it's all legit and above board, then congrats, it is a much nicer car than the usual first car. Lovely place to sit, sounds nice and looks pretty good too.

If you are going to mod it then do it with parts that can be transferred to an STI when you can afford one, like the splitter you said about or wheels. It's a good enough standard car so don't waste money trying to make it into an STI rep

I would keep it standard, sounds like you are trying to make it look like something it clearly is not, might just look a bit silly.
