My Wagon has started making some weird crunching noise's! So which is the best 5 speed to fit as I here all Uk cars are fitted with Choclate gearboxes?? I ve been offered a TY752VBCAA box and diff but not sure if the gearing will be too low for motorway use, any one help?
Cheers

Hello

Yours I think should be a TY754VN1AA

The TY752VBCAA is from a JDM 98 Sti

Ratios are

1st 3.166
2nd 1.882
3rd 1.296
4th 0.972
5th 0.738

Final drive 4.444

The 54VN box is meant to be stronger than the 52VN box. See
http://bbs.scoobynet.com/drivetrain-11/668612-gear... for more details

Won't the gearbox from a newage bugeye WRX TY754 VN2AA fit a 2000 car. I'm sure they use the same type driveshaft fitting and have the same gear and final drive ratios.

Alternatively that being the case find yourself a box and drivesahfts from a later newage car up to 2005yr and swap shafts and box. This is what i did when my bugeye wrx box died. I installed a 2005 box and shafts. They went straight on no messing about.

Thats great thanks!! Funny, depending on who you talk to tell you that the Uk boxes are either weak or strong!!
From what I ve found the Uk cars and the JDM STI boxes have the same ratios!!So will have to wait and see how strong the box will be, maybe Ill leave fitting a bigger turbo for now!!

Thanks again for the replies!

UK and JDM STI don't have the same ratios. Stick with a TY754 box as it is stronger than the 752. A popular mod is a STI 5 or 6 box with a uk 5th (makes it more pleasant on motorways).

Have you priced getting yours sorted? It may not be as much as you think.

Johnny.

Thanks for the input Jonny, I used this site which shows the boxes I have being the same ratio's?? http://www.spda-online.com/content.php?45-Transmis...

Can you suggest someone to overhaul the box? The number of the new box I have is TY752VBCAA

Thanks

I'd be talking to API Engines. They do gearbox rebuilds as well and are very good at what they do. It is going to cost the thick end of £750-£850 depending on how far they have to go with the rebuild after first inspection.

A 2nd hand box will be anything from £350-£450 and there is no guarantee it's going to last of even it's working ok when you have fitted it. It's always a risk but that's 2nd hand parts for you.

At least with a recon/rebuilt box you know it's going to work, it should stay the course, and will have some sort of guarantee with it.

Is it only your 5th Gear by any chance? Or all of them? There was a recall on 99/00 boxes. Yours might have missed it.

With very early scooby boxes you could almost beat the synchros and it was the subject of much debate 10-12 years ago. If your box has been replaced with an older one, it could explain it.

There used to be a very good guilde on the early SIDC site that explained all of these little quirks, a lot of which current owners have no knowledge of.

JDM synchros are definitely difference and specials such as the R/RA and VLimited are different again.

Torque over 350ibs kills any 5speed box (UK or JDM), which will last as long or short as the owner has any mechanical sympathy.
