The oil filter for my 05 Legacy is 70mm diameter and I don't seem to be able to find a socket type tool to remove it easily.

Does anyone know where I can find such a thing as I don't want to get underneath the thing and not be able to get the thing off and it looks like a socket type that fits over the end of the filter is the best bet it terms of access etc?

Thx

Try with your hand first wink provided it wasn't overtightened last time.

Failing that, for tight filters I have something like this which fits a variety of sizes:

And if you get really desperate you can always hammer a screwdriver through the filter for a bit more leverage.

If yours is under the car like an impreza, then the best tool for getting them off (or ANY oil filter off!!!) is one of these;

they only need about 1cm around the outer diametre of the filter to grip, and attach to a socket wrench. With every rotation of the socketwrench the 'fingers' get tighter until the filter starts turning.

Much easier, and ive tried the ones like the other poster suggested (and failed due to only having about a 3cm square space to move the handle, ad the strap ones which fail due to the same lack of space.

Also, if youve ever done it br=efore, whenyou remove the filter, make tottaly sure the rubber O ring comes too!

ooo, i like that matador. Space is limited on the legacy, just like the imp around the exhaust manifold.

Although it does have to be said that it is easier to get Kwik Fit to do for you.

For about £45 they will supply and fit the filter and fully synthetic oil-job done

That almost exactly what my oil and filter set me back.

No messing, no burns from exhaust.

One thing to remember when changing the oil is to disconnect the crank sensor after everything has been put back together and turn the engine over until the oil light goes out.

It helps make sure that everything is coated in oil before you start it.

and prefill the oil filter to minimise dry cranking. The oil filter takes a decent amount of oil to fill.

quick fit touching my car? not a chance.

To be fair to them they did prefill the filter and give the oil a nice long time to get settled before they started the car briefly and then switched off and allowed to settle again before doing a tiny topup.

About as good as you would get in most garages I suspect.
