New Sti Saloon, Spoiler question
Discussion
I see some members have bought the new STI saloons and have low level spoilers fitted. I have seen a couple with the high level spoiler (one local to me and one advertised by Newcastle Subaru).
I understand it's not just a case of adding the spoiler, but changing the boot lid and struts too.
My question to those who have bought new cars, did your dealers give any option to provide the cars with the big wing from new?
The inner chav in me can't get used to the lack of a big wing and I don't want to mess around having it added aftermarket. I'd like to be able to specify one with the big wing from the factory, I have managed similar in the past with other brands.

My understanding was that Subaru were not offering the big spoiler, Mica blue or gold wheels in this country, because they thought that it was not what UK buyers were interested in. I'd be interested to know how some of them are getting into the country with the big wings though, a critical element of a performance scooby imo.
Hmm it's not sounding at simple as I had hoped.
Reading lots of blurb on the net gives the impression that by not including the wing, Subaru UK is making a direct attempt to appeal to wider audiences, at the cost of it's loyal fanbase. Strange then that Subaru in the US and home markets haven't made the same move.
It's fair enough, Subaru UK are in the business of making money not friends. However I can't help feel that a spoiler delete would have been an easier option.
I don't think I can be a*sed with having to buy a new bootlid and spoiler after spending 30k+ on a brand new car.
Perhaps I should just give up and buy a hatch. If I squint, it looks just as good as the saloon with the big wing... I think.

I feel it's the end of the line for the two big rally reps... The Impreza is now way overpriced, so they won't generate the sales volumes, which in turn means they will be dear second hand, therefore making aftermarket parts not viable for manufacturers, etc, etc... Or, nobody will want hem meaning they will tumble in price (like the hatches have)... Either way, I think they are on thier way out...

I wonder if they will make it an option in the future? After all, those new Imprezas aren't exactly flying out of the showrooms, from what I gather.
No they are not, but the dealers don't seem to be that keen to offer any deals either. That coupled with the lack of desired spec, well...They really don't know their customers anymore.

I have a feeling the high selling price will lead to massive depretiation, at least thats what I would hope as I wouldn't mind owning one but cannot justify the inflated cost of an Sti saloon.I think Subaru will fit a big wing for customers. EVO magazine had one on their test car from Subaru

The standard UK price doesn't include any spoiler for the saloon (32k). I got a brochure from Subaru UK this week and there is an option for a small spoiler in the accessories catalog, but no mention of the big wing.I don't believe EVO got the big wing from Subaru, it was probably from the third party who has started making their own. Forget the name HT.. something.
These are apparently lighter than the subaru original, so there are no problems with the UK models weaker bootlid and struts. I don't want to but a new car and then drill the bootlid. I also don't want to have to buy a new Jap spec bootlid and spoiler, spray and have to fit it.
Subaru UK are going to call me back, so I will ask what options there are for getting a big spoiler fitted from the factory. They all come from the same place, so it shouldn't be that hard?

Nope it was definatley a Subaru UK job. Maybe they did it as a one off??The HT company you mentioned is HT Auto http://subaru-impreza-body-kits.co.uk/
But as you say, how hard could it be? It's not like Subaru are selling many cars without the wing so they might as well put it on as an option.
Ah that's the one. Hmm I've tried to find the EVO article where he covers the wing in more depth, but nothing so far. Perhaps it was only covered in the mag and never uploaded to the web.
If that is indeed a genuine wing perhaps there is some hope. I'll see what I can get from Subaru UK.
Cheers

Couldn't agree more. The hatch was a disaster from day 1 despite what the Scooby faithful will tell you. It's a hideous car that is hideously overpriced and conseqeuently hardly anyone wants one. Dealers are closing at a rate of knots and it can't be long before Subaru pull out of the UK. Sad, but when, almost overnight, you alienate nearly all the market you have carefully built up what do you expect? The EVO car car came without a spoiler, and was retro fitted with one by Subaru IRRC! I also believe that the price of the spoiler is £1000 including painting and fitting. I wouldn't be surprised if you could find a dealer to supply a car with one fitted as part of a new car purchase.
... and have you seen the price of 1 year old 4 doors??? £23-24k!!! are you sure you cant afford one?

This one looks like it has a genuine Subaru spoiler: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3697552.htm
576miles and 6k off the price of a new one! Shame it's white. Perhaps Subaru dealers have realised 32k+ was just too much.
I'm off to my local dealer to see what the deal is with the big wing issue. Guess I'll see how desperate they are to sell these things.

Yeah white is just not my thing.
So, had a quick visit to my local dealer. He didn't have any STIs in stock and had sold their demonstrator. We had a chat about the spoiler situation and he said I couldn't get one from the factory with a big spoiler, but that they could fit one. They said that they had done this to all the saloons they had sold. When they get their next demo in, I'll go back for a test drive.
On the way out, In the paddock they had a pearlwhite saloon that belonged to a customer, so I had a look. The big spoiler on this car was adjustable and the horizontal part was flat. Looking at pics on the net the genuine subaru spoiler is not flat, but raised slightly, like the white one in the link I posted above.
The one on the Evo mag car is the same:

The one I saw today looked liked the HT Autos one:

So I am a bit confused. I want a genuine subaru wing, not a copy. I'm not sure it really makes a difference, but if its my money, I want the genuine article. I will discuss this when I go back.
I think I'm going to phone the Hammond Subaru dealer with the white one and see what they say about the wing on their car.
Nothing is simple is it?
