This time of the year when the weather is improving and getting warmer, and you've got a trip to the ring planned, some special stickier than standard rubber might be in order.
Toyo R888 semi slicks or Toyo R1R's. The R888 i'm sure you already know of but there is an alternative between T1R and R888 that will have some longevity and be reasonably sticky with very stiff sidewalls so you can run slightly lower pressures for extra grip. They are known as extreme performance summer tyres.

Thanks for coming in. It would be a leap of faith for me to go Toyo again. I've ran T1r's & 888's. The T1R's were quite frankly awful. The tyre wall was super soft so initial turn in felt OK, but then as the load went into the side wall it collapsed. The tread blocks were also weak, not to say soft compound, but the result was vague turn-in, and squishy mid bend feel. The shoulders were totally scrubbed after a very short time
The 888's I ran on a BEC road/track. Dry road was OK, but on track they overheated and turned to into a sticky mess. This was on a 523Kg car.
I replaced the T1R's on a 330BHP Type R Scooby for some AD08's. Staggering difference. Examining the two off the rim revealed alot. The T1R could be flopped about, while the Yoko was super firm, carcass and wall and this transferred to the drive. RAZER sharp steering response, massive dry grip, and simply beautiful progression. Extremely confidence inspiring.
A friend has been recommending Michelin's - PS2's, & Pilot Super Sports...
I've waffled too much now about something you prolly already know

T1R's are actually pretty good in the wet on the road, not so good in the dry. I folded the tread over on a brand new set of T1R's sometime back on a hot and dry track day on my bugeye wagon. In all fairness to these tyres, it was a stinking hot day and i really did punish them to the fullest
I still bought them for the wet road driving though because i felt they were quite good on the road and suited my style of wet driving at least.
R888's if you can get the right compound, medium/hard 2G, last and don't go so mushy. Unfortunately the most common compound available seems to be the medium/soft 3G, no idea why.
I've read a lot of reviews on the Toyo R1R and they look to be a really good all rounder, as good in the dry as they are in the wet, and have very stiff sidewalls. I think these were a control tyre in WTCC a couple of years back so would need to be good to stand up to that sort of punishment lap after lap.
I personally would like to try a set sometime. They are not cheap but then nothing is these days, and sometimes you've got to pay a bit extra for a quality tyre that does what you require.
I hope you find something that suits your purpose and style of driving.
P.S. Is your wagon a proper JDM Bugeye STi wagon as they only made 1000 i think.

Hmmm... OK, I'll not write off the T1R's just yet. I'm tempted to just go AD08 as I know and like them, we'll see.
Yes, it's a genuine JDM wagon. Rare as hen's teeth. In Japan it had a 'front end saloon conversion' (wings, suspension etc) as well as rear pillow ball links, braided lines. It mapped 330bhp with only a decat so perhaps had a bigger turbo too. Nice find, I don't think the seller knew what he had, and neither did I till I started to fettle

You jammy so and so!!
I saw one for sale in the UK a year or so ago, in white, and it was only 8K at the time. I nearly fell off my chair when i saw it but like always you never have the spare dosh when something like this comes along. I also fancy and S202 in Black. Confirmed Bugeye lover!!
By the way....R1R's for hooning, your Ring trip, and subsequent trackdays, definitely not T1R's

It was jammy as I didn't appreciate what I was buying... I'm still trying to get to the bottom of what's fitted up front as I couldn't get a front aftermarket arb to fit
I guess what I'm after is a good tyre to compliment the chassis enhancements, but most of all I would like a progressive tyre. The Goodyear F1 assy's on at he mo let go suddenly. Not nice

Thats a shame as thats what I was looking at getting next, particularly as the F1 GSD 3's let go so smoothly.I guess what I'm after is a good tyre to compliment the chassis enhancements, but most of all I would like a progressive tyre. The Goodyear F1 assy's on at he mo let go suddenly. Not nice
Back to the drawing board!

Perhaps not the best all rounder then?
More all-round than the R888 or R1R trackday rubber being suggested up the thread!Have to agree about weak soft widewalls on T1R, I hated them. Swapped to Bridgestone RE001 which are much better - though I imagine they'd still get a bit melty given hard track use. RE010 or RE070 are a step up in terms of grip etc, but I need something decent for gravelbashing as well.

I've only ever heard good things about RE070's. The only negative is don't use them in the cold.
@ Ben....As for the R1R's, if you looked at the link i posted to the Tyre reviews website listing comments from people that have actually owned and used R1R's for their trackday and road cars you would see that they are actually a good all round tyre for an extreme performance tyre in either wet or dry weather. They may not wear so well but you can't have everything although they are hugely better than T1R's and better than R888's in heavy wet weather.
As for gravel bashing tyres....Either chuck some AT tyres on your Legacy ( i'd love to see that ) or dig deep and buy some proper Rally tarmac/gravel tyres although i'd like to see you get those on the highway and past NZ coppers.

They are OK in the cold, but you would not want to push it. In the wet they are okay too, however, they are at their best when pushing on in the summer. IMO, they are the best tyre for this car ScoobieWRX said:

It was mainly the wear rate I was talking about as it sounded like the car in question is a daily driver. As far as wet performance etc goes most extreme performance tyres are all good as long as they have a bit of heat in them.ScoobieWRX said:

Not after a rally tyre, but there is a world of difference between road tyres on loose stuff depending on tread pattern and construction - the likes of T1R and GSD3 are floaty as anything (due to lack of longitudinal ribs I think) and the soft sidewalls slice up pretty easily.paulmoonraker said:

BS RE070... Relentless grip when hot

Nothing has been as good as the Yokohama AD08 I presently run on my Impreza Type R. They have super glue like dry traction & laser sharp turn-in & response. Not as good wet, and I've heard folk say loose it when part worn, but that remains to be seen...
The Pilot Super Sports while being one of the most pricey, are consistently rated as one of the best, and also one of the longest lasting
